ABC premieres a new version of crime series Father Brown, the Catholic priest with a talent for solving crimes.

Picture shows: Father Brown (MARK WILLIAMS)Next week ABC premieres a new version of crime series Father Brown,  based on the short stories by G K Chesterton.

Set in the 1950s in the English countryside, it stars Mark Williams (Harry Potter, The Indian Doctor, Doctor Who) as the Catholic priest with a talent for solving crimes.

Each episode sees the enigmatic priest investigate a crime in his own particular way, using intuition and psychology. Father Brown discovers the truth of a crime by looking into the truth of the soul – the passions, dark secrets, hidden desires.

Having spent many years hearing his parishioners’ confessions has given Father Brown an uncanny insight into the origins of evil and the workings of the criminal mind. But the stories are not concerned with judgement – Father Brown is more interested in saving souls than in bringing the guilty to justice.

Full of humour and compassion, but with a big dramatic twist each time, this series remains true to the period charm of the original character and setting while bringing a sharp contemporary edge to the storytelling.

Father Brown stars Sorcha Cusack as Mrs McCarthy (White Heat, Love Life), Nancy Carroll as Lady Felicia (Cambridge Spies, The Gathering Storm), Kasia Koleczek as Susie (May I Kill U?), Hugo Speer as Inspector Valentine (Watson & Oliver, Five Days).

When an ungodly man is murdered at the unveiling of a new church clock, Father Brown must find the killer before an innocent woman is sent to the gallows.

7:30pm Saturday, 6 July ABC1.

  1. Given that I’m not taking up a pay TV subscription, I wondering whether it’s worth investing time on quality BBC drama programs, knowing that I won’t see any new seasons for twelve months after it shows on pay TV..

  2. A Catholic priest working in the countryside of England in the 1950s. He wouldn’t of exactly been welcome considering how incredibly Protestant those areas are!
