Police enquiries after Nigella “attack”

Scotland Yard officers will investigate the incident involving Nigella Lawson and her husband at a London restaurant.

2013-06-17_0142_001Officers from Scotland Yard Community Safety Unit at Westminster will investigate the incident involving Nigella Lawson and her husband at a London restaurant Scotts in Mayfair on the weekend.

A Sunday newspaper published photos which appeared to show the UK cook being grabbed around her throat by her art collector husband Charles Saatchi, 70.

“Enquires are in hand to establish the facts of the incident,” a spokesperson said.

He said Lawson, 53, had not lodged a complaint but declined to confirm whether any other member of the public had done so.

Reports of the heated conversation suggested at first Saatchi used one hand, then both and later pushed both hands into Lawson’s face. The incident could clearly be seen by other customers and passers-by in the busy London street.

She later left the scene in tears.

Social media responded with concern at the fact nobody intervened during the distressing scene.

The Daily Mail today reports Lawson left her home with a suitcase just hours later.

  1. I agree David it’s a serious situation and does poss a few questions about domestic violence and what to do about it. Given the news coverage today I’d say it’s not going to be blown over or pushed aside quickly.

  2. I find it more disturbing that pictures were taken but as far has been reported, no one found the time to step in and help?

Says a lot more about society!

  3. Not only this but fights in the streets etc…everyone gets out their phones…no one does anything to help…or ring for help even…scary…
    DK…your house …your rules…

  4. Ok let’s detract from the real issue at hand and discuss whether I should or shouldn’t have published an image on a blog about television. The pics are available far and wide, including on the link I provided. A tabloid will run them in full, but a blog is reflective of the individual editor and I found those pics disturbing.

I believe what I wrote conveyed the gravity of the situation (otherwise I wouldn’t have gone there at all) and the involvement of police made it news-worthy until we hear further from Ms. Lawson herself. I don’t see any evidence of “fluff” or “storm in a teacup” in the story. I’d suggest any concerns about a softening of the media should be taken up with Australian news media.

  5. @PJs Ronin – it’s much better than the pic I’ve seen else where with his hands wrapped around her neck.

I just hope the full truth comes out sooner rather than later.

  6. @ David

Whilst I appreciate that this is your site and the content is solely your prerogative, I find your reluctance to publish the images of Nigella in distress symptomatic of a general softening of news in general within Australia. How can we rightly pursue an issue, with all its horrors, when we cover it with with fluff.

The image above shows Nigella being relaxed, perhaps even upbeat and goes against the grain of the issue at hand. A reader’s cursory look at your page, without bouncing off to the Mirror site, may well come to the conclusion that this story is little more than a storm in a teacup. It is far from that.

  7. Out of curiosity, David why did you choose not to use a picture from the incident, but rather another one taken by another pap at the same resturant on another day.

In the mirror’s photo she is wearing a black top with red dots.

  8. If you see the other photos – the fear in her eyes is obvious.

No one, no matter the gender, should have eyes that show that sort of fear. Ever.

If it wasn’t front page today, then it’ll be front page another day for a completely different, and more horrific, reason. Then we’ll be wondering: why didn’t someone do something earlier?

  9. Must agree with the others here @ Bazza. Pretty disgusting calling this story not important. She’s a TV icon, whom TVT reports on, and this is news. Its domestic violence, its in the public eye, its been caught on camera and totally disgusting to have happened in the first place. I think DK is correct in showing a story like this.

  10. Really Bazza? There is a possibility that this woman has been assaulted by her partner but you don’t seem to think it’s that big a deal? Now that is disturbing.

  11. Perhaps the scene wasn’t as distressing as it’s being construed… (which seems eminently likely)

If this is truly front page news then clearly all wars have ceased, no children died today and disease is now a thing of the past?
