TEN gets Wanted

wantedTEN is boldly returning to a factual genre we haven’t seen on our screens for some time as the public is asked to help solve actual police cases.

Wanted will air live from TEN’s Sydney studio, using social media and dramatised reconstructions, from cold-case murders to major assault, missing persons, sex crimes, cybercrime, scams and criminals on the run.

Produced by Cordell Jigsaw Zapruder, it will be hosted by Sandra Sully, and TEN News presenter and former crime reporter Matt Doran, forensic anthropologist Dr Xanthe Mallett and investigative crime reporter Neil Mercer. Former NSW Detective Superintendent Terry Dalton will also report, drawing upon 30 years in the field.

The most successful in this genre, Australia’s Most Wanted, ended in 1999 after a long run on Seven and a short run on Nine (Crimestoppers still airs as a community service on Nine). Foxtel had much success with Crime Investigation Australia but with less emphasis on public participation.

TEN Chief Programming Officer, Beverley McGarvey, said: “In the modern world of social media, there is no better time to re-invent a true-life crime program, which has been one of the enduring staples of television. CJZ has a great track record in factual programming and we’re excited to include Wanted in our program schedule for 2013.”

CJZ Executive Producer, Michael Cordell, said: “Society’s interest in crime is primal. From cold-case murders to armed robbers on the run, this is the public’s chance to help bring criminals to justice. Wanted will bring viewers the inside story on major crimes every week. It will break news and make news. Our aim is very simple: to help make our community a safer place.”

  1. Given the old Australia’s Most Wanted rated pretty well i wonder why its taken so long for this sort of show to make a comeback. Especially with audiences being able to interact through the internet i’m surprised it hasn’t happened sooner. Or is that the very reason, legal issues perhaps? ie too much being said on twitter etc that may affect someones right to a fair trial.
I’m also a bit of a Sully fan so will be watching anyway, even though i detest ten’s constant overly loud promos for Masterchef or whatever else they’re flogging at the time, will have my finger on the mute button, or record it so i can skip the promos.

  2. This actually seems like a good idea for Ten. It’s within the realms of what they can do, and it’s a format that hasn’t been on here in a long time.

Meanwhile, I keep waiting for Matt Doran not to feel like a cadet reporter and it’s yet to happen. Just something very awkward about his “style”.

  3. @Boogie Howser, mwahahahaha!! Comedy gold!! Camo2, good idea, I’d love to see a great comments file, there have been some absolute rippers on these forums over the years!

I like true crime shows so I will probably give this one a try. Not a Sully fan, but I do like this style of program.

  4. I want to say that I’ll probably give this a miss, but then I would tune in to watch Sandra Sully reading from a telephone directory…

  5. Sounds good, two great hosts and an interesting format. I have been wanting to see a return of Australia’s Most Wanted in some form for years.
