ABC iview promising more original commissions

ABC will commission more original content for iview from local production companies.

iview2The ABC will commission more programs commissioned exclusively for iview, and a suite of new features, to be rolled out in coming months.

“We’re excited to be working in partnership with local production companies to offer original Australian storytelling on iview, as a creative and accessible platform,” said Arul Baskaran, ABC’s Controller of TV Multiplatform.

In April, iview set a new record for total monthly program plays across all platforms and devices of 15.4 million.

From today ABC iview is also now fully integrated with IPTV service Fetch TV.

“As a public broadcaster our focus is on making ABC content as easily accessible as possible. Fetch TV is another way the ABC is providing TV on the viewer’s terms, at a time and place of their choice,” said Baskaran

“Internet-delivered TV on big screens will continue to grow in popularity as broadband speeds and screen resolutions improve.”

ABC iview was recently awarded Best Entertainment by AIMIA, in addition to Best App on a Mobile, and was named one of the top 10 most downloaded apps in Australia and New Zealand.

  1. Some related news I happened to read on google after first seeing the above article. Relevant to other folk’s comments:

  2. Hoping ABC Iview goes HD soon? Can’t stand the low bit-rate that it is streamed at at the moment on to my 40 inch Sony HD Bravia. And hopeful they won’t put logos and watermarks on it when they do. Hopeful that ABC learns from Aunty BBC who does not put watermarks on their programs anymore.

  3. Hopefully they’ll bump the bit-rate up a bit. The content’s good but it looks pretty crappy on anything larger than a 15″ screen.

  4. I love iView, great to see the ABC isn’t standing still with it. I do wish though that they’d offer it on Apple TV — given that it’s available on the iPhone and iPad why not ATV too? Ditto for SBS OnDemand.

It’s already available on Sony Blu-ray players and TVs fitted with their WiFi dongle, so they obviously don’t mind it going to the TV screen.

  5. I, like many, watch Iview because it is the best…take care with changes, ‘improvements’ and suite of new features ….you do not spoil it..
    Old saying….If it aint broke….

  6. imagine the iview figures when they finally have an android client? Surely getting it working on android would bring more viewers than fetch tv.

  7. I used to use Iview all the time as well as 9’s app… but since moving to android phone… its no longer an option… considering that Android now out sell iphone…apparently… you would thing they would have a device for all platforms

Yeah, well, first, many of us have to be able to connect to the Internet.

  9. ABC’s iView is fantastic. Works so well on iPhone and iPad. I just can’t understand how the commercial network’s offerings are so poor. At least Nine and Ten work on the iPad. Plus7 still doesn’t play on iDevices.

I don’t see why they all don’t have apps like iView and SBS’s on demand.
