2013-07-07_0130Legendary presenter HG Nelson takes a look at Australian icons later this month for Nat Geo, in Aussie Icons With HG Nelson.

Another special, Blow Your Mind With HG Nelson, will premiere tonight.

Look around the room. How many everyday items began with good old Aussie ingenuity? The answer may surprise you…

Premiering Sunday July 21 at 8.30pm AEST on National Geographic Channel on FOXTEL, Aussie Icons With HG Nelson takes a look at the amazing inventions and genius ideas that have put Australia on the map and changed our lives forever.

Aussie legend HG Nelson uncovers the history, importance and inner working of our best inventions. From the Hills Hoist in the backyard to the Holden Ute in the shed, the story of each Australian icon is brought to life by HG, industry experts and the inventors themselves.

Host HG Nelson said “Like many Australians I come up with a lot of brilliant ideas but sadly I have neither the grunt or poke to develop these brain explosions past the dream stage. Aussie Icons gets you up close with remarkable inventions and introduces you to the Australian bright sparks who had the drive from the back-line to see their idea become a reality”.

Australian inventions featured include:

Black box flight recorder
Frozen embryo technology
The Esky
Ultrasound technology
Stay-sharp kitchen knife
Baby capsule
Drizabone
Wine cask
Wi-fi
Polymer banknote
School Of The Air
Emergency exit slide raft
Hills Hoist
Holden Ute
Cochlear implant

HG Nelson is also hosting Blow Your Mind With HG Nelson, premiering Sunday July 7 at 8.30pm AEST only on National Geographic Channel.

Through a series of games and experiments played on the general public, HG explores the flaws, shortcomings and evolutionary quirks of the human mind. The only catch – the subjects have no idea they’re taking part.

  1. Saw a show with Roy advertised (I think it was in relation to Australian houses) on Nat Geo (one of those channels) to start soon also,.

  2. Unfortunately, “Blow Your Mind” looked like a re-hash of other documentary material (i.e. with new presenter inserted). Hopefully “Aussie Icons” fairs better with more content specifically produced for the show. Still – a Very welcome return to TV for HG and hopefully Nat Geo have other work lined up (and to be on-sold to FTA television).

  3. @laurie,

You’re either very young, or you don’t like HG, or both.

David’s use of the word “Legendary” is entirely appropriate. HG is both “extremely famous” and notorious – he is a dead set legend.

  4. I love Roy & HG too, but annoyed it’s going to be on Foxtel. Surely one of the other networks should be showing this. Really pisses me off when I hear of a good show, and then it goes to Foxtel.

  5. @ Dr Rudi – I agree 100%.

I think it’s a great shame that Roy & HG have simply ‘faded away”. They were big part of my radio and TV entertainment for decades and I sorely miss their brilliant/idiotic shtick 🙁
