Airdate: Australia: Life On The Edge

National Geographic Channel has a new 6 part series which centres on the stories found on Australia's coastline.

2013-07-30_1259WA-based Prospero Productions has filmed Australia: Life On The Edge, a new series for the National Geographic Channel which centres on the stories found on Australia’s coastline.

The six-part series features historian Mat McLachlan, marine biologist Giovanna Fasanelli, geologist Andrew Bales and author / adventurer Paul Carter.

FOX International Channels Australia’s Managing Director Karin Simoncini said, “Australia is a stunning country and so many of its fascinating stories and beautiful sights are defined by the sea. We were very keen on producing locally a series that showcased the most spectacular places in the country, and bring them to our National Geographic viewers.”

The Australian story may be filled with images of the Outback and life on the land, but it’s the coast that makes us who we are. Most Aussies live on the coast, our early history is defined by the coast and much of our modern economy is dependent on the coast.

Premiering Sunday August 18 at 7.30pm AEST on National Geographic Channel on Foxtel, Australia: Life On The Edge brings together a team of passionate experts who soar into the sky and dive into unfamiliar waters in search of the hidden stories and unique landscapes that mark our dramatic coastline.

In a world-premiere six-part series, historian Mat McLachlan, marine biologist Giovanna Fasanelli, geologist Andrew Bales and author/adventurer Paul Carter take viewers on a spectacular journey filled with compelling storytelling, expert knowledge and stunning aerial and underwater imagery.

Focussing on the people who live there, the history played out upon it and the sea itself, this energetic team take viewers on an incredible odyssey around Australia highlighting fascinating stories of the present and the past:

Midget Sub Attack, Sydney Harbour – When Japanese mini-submarines attacked Sydney firing torpedoes from Sydney Harbour, the streets of the city were thrown into panic. The team retraces the deadly path taken by the submarines, bringing back to life the events of May 1942.

Survival Training in WA, Perth – Author/adventurer Paul Carter joins WA’s fly-in-fly-out workers as they learn how to survive the life and death situations they may be faced with, including helicopter crashes and explosions on an oil rig.

· Stromatolites: Australia’s Strangest Creatures, The Midwest Coast – In Shark Bay, Marine biologist Giovanna Fasanelli encounters some strange rock-like creatures, known as Stromatolites, that provide not only a unique insight into life at the dawn of time, but also a modern-day diary of our changing planet.

Working with local producers Prospero Productions, the series was brought to life using top-end technology; the Odyssea, a unique two-person mini submersible which dives up 100 metres, C-Quest, a high-tech ocean-going craft equipped with an array of high-tech equipment and a state-of-the-art helicopter.
