Created by Emmy and BAFTA award-winning writer Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Bleak House) and starring Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Mr Selfridge brings to life the spectacular rise and fall of the American retail genius in a lavish and seductive period drama set in glamorous, bustling London. Set in 1909, Mr Selfridge follows a colourful cast of characters whose lives and fortunes are entangled with the founder of the magnificent department store. Australia’s Frances O’Connor plays Harry’s wife, Rose.

  1. Mr Selfridge is historically interesting, but the key thing that doesn’t work about it is Jeremy Piven. He has neither the innate charisma nor the acting chops to pull off such a commanding, larger than life character.

  2. Audience fatigue with UB #? and Ripper Street being DOA has opened up an opportunity so this decision sends a strange message to advertisers – Seven is prepared to concede Sunday nights.

  3. Seven had DA, A Place To Call Home and Revenge so they didn’t really need to put Mr Selfridge on before now anyway.

Mr Selfridge, being full of sex and melodrama rather than manners and bonnets, out rated the Paradise in the UK.

I think Seven were planning to show Mr Selfridge on Sunday after A Place To Call Home but with Underbelly, TOOL and Ripper Street on, the Mole leaving them struggling for a base to launch a new show, no dramas on other networks on Monday and a hole caused by Red Widow tanking, Monday makes sense.

They may lose Sunday nights to Nine but will be hoping that The X Factor followed by suitable dramas will win them Mon, Tues and Wed and the week.

  4. I have been waiting for this one….I read somewhere…cannot remember where DK…that this was held back because The Paradise got the jump on them.

  5. I’m very into the history of supermarkets, malls, departments stores etc but the Underbelly like promos do nothing for me. I’ll stick to docos or a more realistic drama.
