  1. Good to see a commercial channel is showing every ball of every test in Australia of an Ashes series in the UK. Hurrah for the anti-siphoning laws allowing for the Ashes to be shown on GEM.

It is the first time Nine has the FTA rights for an Ashes series in the UK since 1997. Seven had the Ashes in 2001, and SBS in 2005 and 2009.

Would of liked to see Nine assemble their own commentary team for the series but most of them are in their 60s or 70s.

And they are showing the ODI series and T20s on top of that. Hello late nights!

The sports I have seen on GEM or even 7mate is upscaled from SD so technically its not HD while One broadcasts sports in full HD

  3. This is great news. The Ashes in HD on GEM, i do wish that Nine would just change the name of the HD channel back to Nine HD makes more sense. GEM is a lousy female orientated channel. Looking forward to this. People should understand that if they want to watch live F1 or Wimbledon or Ashes in England or Europe then they will have to put up with it, at least its Live. Seven begin Wimbledon on 7two because of their commitment to shows on 7, at least its way better then what Nine did which was show it at 10.30 pm and not Live, way better on Seven Sport.

  4. At least it is on Gem, in HD for those who want it.

Channel 7’s switching between 72 and 7 for Wimbledon has been annoying. I recorded the Tomic Berdych game because it started after 3am and discovered last night that they switched back to 72 at 5:30am and I missed the last set.

‘Stunning’ might be stretching it a bit when talking about the picture quality of Gem if the league they show on it in Melbourne is anything to go by.

  6. Yep definitely looks like it will be the Sky Sports commentary. Tony Greig and Ian Chappell were the only Nine guys willing to travel to commentate in recent years. Tony has sadly passed on, and there’s no way in hell Ian Chappell would go even go to the same cricket ground as Ian Botham – they have a huge fued going on.
Mark Nicholas might be there, but he’s pommy anyway…It’ll be Shane Warne and a bunch of smug Poms basically!
