Irish-Canadian co-production Vikings, featuring Aussies Travis Fimmel and Alyssa Sutherland plus Gabriel Byrne begins on SBS ONE next week.
The 9 part series will take the place of Better Man from 8:35pm Thursday August 8th and kicks off with a double episode.
Premiering with the first two episodes back to back, the dramatic untold story of the fiercest warriors of all time comes to life in the new drama series, Vikings. Direct from the US, this top rating series stars two Australians: model, actor and former Calvin Klein model Travis Fimmel and Alyssa Sutherland.
While Vikings is filled with conflict, warfare and bloodshed there is also a family saga at its heart. It follows the adventures of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel), a curious, compelling man who is always looking to break through barriers and discover new worlds to conquer on his quest to become King of the Vikings. A young farmer and family man, Ragnar is deeply frustrated by the unadventurous policies of his local chieftain, Earl Haraldson (Gabriel Byrne).
8.35pm: Rites of Passage – The story begins in 8th century Scandinavia where Ragnar Lothbrok is a warrior and a farmer who dreams of finding riches by bucking the tradition of raiding to the east. Ragnar has been working in secret on a project that will turn the Viking world on its head. But first he must convince the leader of his community, the powerful Earl Haraldson, of the project’s potential.
9.30pm: Wrath of the Northmen – The stage is set for the first journey west by Ragnar Lothbrok as he gathers a crew willing to risk their lives to travel into the unknown. Earl Haraldson’s paranoia reaches new heights as it becomes apparent that trust is hard to come by in this dark era.Â

According to this story, this Ragnar discovered England because he had a Compass!!! What ???
If so, tthen how did the Celts, Saxons, Romans etc get there?
Travel and trade accross the North Sea had been happening for thousands of years.
It’s an early form of a compass using sun / shadows not magnetics. Watch the show I guess?
Thanks guys. Not looking for a doco so I expect some license to be taken (as with Deadwood and others). Will def be tuning in.
A great series. Well worth watching for fans of “Game of Thrones”, “Spartacus” (nowhere near as violent though) and Rome. High quality series from The History Channel.

Watched the whole first series and it is nicely done, haunting soundtrack, great visuals – sets and landscapes. Fairly historically accurate with some poetic license – definitely in for another season
had no idea Travis Fimmel was that Aussie model guy but he makes a great Ragnar Loefbrook

Of course its not perfectly historically accurate, but it does make a decent attempt. I give it 4 gold stars.
Been seeing the ads for this the last few weeks (a little too often). It looks like it has potential, maybe an 8th century version of Deadwood? Anyone seen it?
