Former Today Tonight executive producer Craig McPherson has now been hired by Nine to become head of development for news and current affairs and to build Nine’s brand in Adelaide and Perth.

The Australian reports he will work with news boss Darren Wick on a digital strategy across news and current affairs.

When McPherson was at Seven he was regularly in Nine’s crosshairs but he departed from Seven late last year after he was overlooked for the head of news and current affairs role when Peter Meakin retired. That role was split between Rob Raschke (news) and Neil Mooney (current affairs).

In the case of another Seven insider defecting to the opposition, he will bring with him enormous intel into Seven’s strategy and like it or not, TT was performing much better under his watch than without.

McPherson’s partner Sonia Kruger also left Seven two years ago to join Nine.
