Returning: The Newsroom

The Newsroom is about to be added to Showcase's bumper schedule in two weeks time.

2013-07-01_1446Mondays are getting awfully cramped for choice.

The Newsroom is about to be fast-tracked to Showcase’s bumper schedule in two weeks time.

It will premiere 5:30pm Monday July 15, just hours after the US, and with a primetime replay at 8:30pm.

That means True Blood replay moves back to 7:30pm and Dexter remains at 9:30pm.

Have we ever had a line-up of first-run drama that strong?

The Newsroom was created by Aaron Sorkin, the award-winning writer of The West Wing and The Social Network. This popular HBO drama follows the trials and tribulations of volatile news anchor, Will McAvoy (Jeff Daniels), his devoted executive producer MacKenzie McHale (Emily Mortimer) and their talented news team as they embark on a tumultuous mission to provide accurate news in a world of corporate agendas.

Season 2 will take place over a five-day period leading up to Election Day 2012, and will encompass numerous flashbacks to earlier events from 2011 and 2012. One of the season’s major story arcs involves a wrongful-termination lawsuit made by a staff member alleged to have doctored a report about a suspicious U.S. drone strike. As details about the suit’s origin and aftermath emerge, the team continues its quixotic mission to “do the news well” in the face of corporate and commercial obstacles, and their personal entanglements.

The Newsroom boasts a talented supporting cast including Sam Waterston as News Division Boss Charlie Skinner, John Gallagher Jr., Alison Pill, Thomas Sadoski, Olivia Munn and Dev Patel in addition to returning guest stars Jane Fonda (2 time Oscar® winner) and Hope Davis.

New cast members this season include Marcia Gay Harden (Oscar® winner for Pollock) as Rebecca Halliday, a lawyer hired to defend ACN staffers in its wrongful-termination case; Hamish Linklater as Jerry Dantana, brought up from W ashington to temporarily replace Jim when the latter heads to the Romney campaign; Grace Gummer as Hallie Shea, a reporter competing with Jim on the Romney campaign trail; and Riley Voelkel as Jennifer, the student hired by Will as an intern in the season 1 finale after he railed at her question “What makes the U.S. the greatest country in the world?” in Episode 1.

Monday July 15 at 5.30pm (8.30pm Primetime) on Showcase.

  1. Hope the poor old series link can keep up with all these changes.
Showcase certainly is the best channel on Australian TV – Pay or FTA.

  2. Those without will say that it’s nothing but repeats, but the fast tracking foxtel has is great and you don’t have to chase your shows. I saw the article for 7 playing ‘Go On’ and knew immediately it’ll end up with Happy Endings and Cougar Town; never where it was the week before!
