2013-07-10_1748The Footy Show‘s Shane Crawford is due to arrive in Perth on Thursday following a marathon 3600km bike ride from Melbourne, in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness.

Locals can catch him at Hay Street Mall tomorrow afternoon then at Crown Perth in the evening.

Crawf set off on his transcontinental marathon from Melbourne on Thursday, June 20, and rode through Victoria and South Australia before he embarked on the toughest stage of the tour – crossing the unforgiving Nullarbor Plain. Enduring freezing conditions and dodging the odd kangaroo and wedge-tailed eagle kept the monotony out of the Nullarbor straights for Crawf, who has averaged 180 km a day on his bike at a speed of 35km/h.

“I am nearly at the finish line and it hasn’t been easy, but the support and effort shown by all the people along the way has blown me away,” Crawf said.

“Riding through all those small country towns, some with only ten people, and meeting the inspiring breast cancer survivors and people affected by breast cancer has been a true highlight. The generosity of Australia has been incredible.”

People power has kept Shane motivated, spurring him on throughout the journey with inspirational stories that gave him the strength to keep pedalling through the pain barrier all the way to Perth.

In 21 days Crawf has clocked up more than 3500 km on the bike, leaving him 100km to complete tomorrow to wrap up this epic mission for Breast Cancer Network Australia. As Crawf spends his last night in Northam, iconic buildings in Perth will turn pink in support of him and Breast Cancer Network Australia.

For those who want to support Shane tomorrow on his final day, he will cycle through Hay Street Mall when he arrives in Perth.

He is on schedule to arrive in Perth tomorrow afternoon and will join his AFL show colleagues for their live broadcast of The Footy Show from Crown Perth.

Supporters are also encouraged to head down to Crown Perth for Shane at 6.00pm to cheer him on to celebrate the final leg of the Tour de Crawf before he joins the boys on The Footy Show. Breast cancer survivors will form a guard of honour to greet him at the finish line.

The best way to stay up to date on Shane’s movements on Thursday is via The AFL Footy Show’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Maxine Morand, BCNA CEO and a breast cancer survivor herself, said the Tour de Crawf has had a huge impact on communities along the route.

“Shane occupies a very special place in the hearts of all our members and we have been overwhelmed by the generosity and support he has received,” Maxine said.

“Many breast cancer survivors have had the opportunity to meet Shane and share their stories with him throughout his epic challenge, and I know this has been inspiring for Shane on the days he has struggled.”

  1. A truly inspiring effort by Shane Crawford, not only raising money, but awareness for Breast Cancer. Having lost 2 great friends to the disease in the last 18 months, both with young children, I know how important every cent towards research is.
I would love to see Crawf’s efforts rewarded, maybe with an Australian of the Year nomination. Well done Shane, Australia is proud of you!

  2. I hope nothing bad ever happens to him but if it does, Australia better get behind and support him all the way. he has done so much for the fight on breast cancer. Crawf is an inspiration and a true role model.
