When is a Big Brother twist not a Big Brother twist?

A cute couple as a fake married pair enters Big Brother -but it's hardly the second twist we were promised.

2013-07-31_0211Two more housemates entered the Big Brother compound last night, 24 year old Drew and 22 year old Jade, both under instructions from Big Brother to assume the role of a married couple.

From the footage we saw in last night’s episode it seems the other housemates are already wise to the shenanigans. They seem like a cute couple (further reiterating the 20-something dominated household) but I don’t really buy this as one of the two “twists” that Nine teased us with.

It’s really just a challenge, similar to many others that we’ve seen across the years.

And it’s a long way short of the supposed biggest stunt seen in the 12 years of the house (or words to that effect…..).

I still remember the twin Logans as TV gold, watching a kind of sitcom of mistaken identity take place across the 2005 season.

Farmer Dave coming out in 2006 was another highlight, the same year Michael McCoy was an “insider” doing deeds for BB. Then there was that hideous White Room in 2007. Or the year the housemates were told there was no prize money.

Heck even last year’s fake housemates in another house strikes me as more of a twist than a faux-married couple. It looks like lasting as long as Miriam’s entry in 2004, spotted by Fitzy the minute she walked through the door. “I’ll give you the hot tip, that’s a bloke,” he whispered. Good one, Fryzie.

The half-way house and safe-house division is a good start towards instant conflict, even if it’s a variation on what TEN did in 2003.

This season has added more cultural diversity, but there is a surprising number of models / actors / media faces in the mix for the show that last year told us it was banning attention-seekers and party animals. There are two girls coming who look like they are straight out of The Shire.

The launch numbers for Monday night were ok at 1.3m viewers but there’s a long way to go and after 9 seasons and 1 celebrity version it’s fair to say we expect a lot from this franchise.

  1. @david knox, yeah I know that, your story was about how they are repeating twists, I’m pointing out they have pretty much copied it in every way

  2. besides the fact that they tried everything to get the ratings and had two horrible hosts, the final season of big brother on ten was one of the best, they had a diverse bunch of housemates from all over the country

  3. I’m loving this season of Big Brother. Each day I find myself eagerly looking forward to the next episode, which is in stark contrast to last year where I could only bring myself to watch small sections of the Sunday night and Monday night episodes.

This year’s housemates are a reasonably diverse mix of likeable people who appear to have an average IQ higher than previous years’ contestants. I particularly like Ben, who is incredibly articulate despite his social awkwardness, and Tully who is smart but full of nervous tension.

Even the one housemate who I dislike strongly, Tim, makes for fascinating television. Clearly he has a dominating presence about him because when he suggested to the other members of the safe house that they should not display any compassion towards the members of the half-way house, no one in the safe house challenged him. In fact, they all remained…

  4. I think adding in new housemates each night and variations-on-previously-used-twists is confusing. Also, throwing in one mother does not make it a more diverse bunch of housemates than last year, sorry.

  5. If big brother gave Drew and Jade more time to actually connect they could have pulled it of a lot better. as for the twin sisters entering to trick the housemates. boring….

in the UK version they did the rich and poor thing and if I recall the housemates ended up pulling down the fence.

  6. Yes, I agree that sounds more like a challenge rather than a twist. It would have been more convincing if they went with an older pair to pull off the married stunt. Would also be good to see some more age diversity.

That being said, I’m enjoying it so far and the halfway house is proving to be fun. Sonia is promising that there is another part of the twist coming tonight with 3 new housemates entering the house.

  7. ”What we don’t want to do is end up casting a house of wannabes.” – Alex Mavroidakis, BB Exec Producer in SMH article.

I assume the other “twist” is that after the Saturday Showdown games… the losers will be in the Halfway House and all automatically nominated for eviction, while the winners in the Safe House will be, well, safe.

If they wanted this to be a surprise they probably shouldn’t have referred to it as the Safe House just yet.

  8. Nice twist would be that after a week of Safe house HM’s tormenting Half Way house HM’s, they are made to switch houses. Anyone remember Das Experiment (English: The Experiment) – a 2001 German movie?

  9. I’m a massive Big Brother fan, but I’ve been really disappointed this year. I didn’t even really feel like watching last night.

I think the way the half way house is designed is really good and smart, but to claim that is the biggest twist in the history of Big Brother is just stupid and a lie. I’m hoping they have more exciting ‘twists’ planned… perhaps something interesting will be happening with the new twins?

I also think the new opening titles and graphics in general are real poor this year. The ones made seven years ago for BB06 look even better than this…

Also, what happened to “there will be more housemates entering the Big Brother house than ever before”?

  10. If a twist is the opposite of what’s expected than BB hasn’t given us any. Just variations on the same old same old. Feeling very cheated!

  11. How about Karen and Krystal (mum and daughter)? It was the opposite but had to keep their relationship secret at the start

Anyway, I’m finding the housemates this year better than last year, last years were terrible

  12. SBS2 needs to replay “Dead Set” from a few years ago – then we can all imagine what it would look like to see these wanna bes attacked by zombies.

  13. I’m still confused, have we actually seen the twist? Sonia said it would be revealed once all the housemates are in. I know for the first week or so they need keep things interesting but I just want to see some ordinary interaction with these characters.

  14. They should have put the ‘married couple’ in from the start. Bringing them in a day later will instantly make the house question it. Plus how long were the in quarantine? Surely if they’ve seen the TV they already know there is a twist to look out for?

  15. Well BB without heaps of BS would not be BB.

Now if I was Drew, I would insist on regular consumation of the marriage with Jade….y’know gotta make it look authentic and all that.

Which brings about the question…Is this a bit of a risky premise for BB and potentially putting Jade in a rather awkward postion?

  16. Ha ha, I thought the exact same thing when they showed those twins. They are a blonde version of Vernessa and whatever the other girls name was.

Big Brother said it was the first time a married couple has been in the Big Brother house. Well he has a short memory as there was a married couple before, but it was the opposite, they had to pretend not to know each other and fool the other house mates. And there was a mother & daughter too who had to do the same thing.
