Who will bring us Sharknado?

Update: And the lucky channel with the Aussie broadcast rights is ......

It’s been all the buzz on social media.

Sharknado -the over-the-top US telemovie about a hurricane that sweeps up hundreds of sharks and plummets them onto Los Angeles- has won a following for its wild concept.

The movie aired on the Syfy network in the US to 1.37 million viewers, but on social media its impact was far greater.

SF network in Australia told TV Tonight it wasn’t due to get the rights.

“We wish!” a spokesperson said.

UPDATE: TV Tonight can confirm it will premiere on Pay TV channel Universal at 8:30pm Monday September 9th.

  1. I’m with you @nevothirty I love these types of movies, Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus, Mega Piranha, Mega Shark vs CrocoSaurus, 2-Headed Shark Attack, DinoCroc, PiranhaConda, Sharktopus and etc (growing up on Troma Films like Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke ‘Em High, Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead etc probably helps).

Even some of the Asylum knock-off movies are fun to watch like the Sherlock Holmes one is fantastic as is Transmorphers, the schlock genre is full of little gems

  2. I love these horrible movies. I remember watching one were one of the characters was killed a few scenes later she was alive… mock busters are terrible with horrible scripts, poor acting, horrible effects, but are like any accident, you can’t look away

  3. “It’s all the buzz of social media, which is why we at Universal believe we should delay it by two months.”

Is anyone in a Twitter-buzz society even going to care in two months? Will the demographic of young people who would watch this not have already watched it by then?

  4. The Universal Channel regularily airs all these over the top movies as part of their ‘Mockbuster Mayhem’ lineup, so I assumed they would get this too.

Other Mockbusters include Atomic Twister and Collision Earth, and all the movies seem to include either twisters, asteriods or nuclear meltdowns.
