Axed: Magic City

The US period drama which gave Jessica Marais her US break will end with its second season finale.

2013-08-06_1108US period drama Magic City, which features Jessica Marais as a 1950’s Miami trophy wife, will end with its second season finale.

US cable network Starz has opted not to renew for a third season.

The fictional drama chronicled mobsters, politicians and entertainers at a posh Miami hotel just as Fidel Castro took control of Cuba, and starred Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

“We are tremendously proud of the series and everyone involved,” Starz said in a statement. “From the writers, to the cast and crew, it has been an incredible collaboration. This was a story born from (writer) Mitch Glazer’s singular vision of Miami, the Magic City of his childhood, and we are grateful to him for bringing it to life on Starz. The season’s story arc will allow us to deliver a satisfying conclusion to the series, and we thank all the fans who checked in to the Miramar Playa.”

Deadline reports Magic City received little critical attention and did not grow its audience in the second season, something networks want to see, especially on an expensive drama.

But it’s not all bad news for Jessica Marais who will star in Nine’s Love Child drama and ABC’s Carlotta telemovie.

Magic City‘s last ever episode premieres this Sunday night on SoHo.

  1. This rather follows the pattern of most Starz Originals which did not last for more than two seasons and to be quite frank I don’t think Magic City deserved a third season especially a scene from a recent episode made me sick to the core.
