  1. A very witty and intelligent writer. His TV criticism for The Observer 1972 to 1982 was brilliant and still well worth a read in the published volumes – Visions Before Midnight, Glued to the Box, and, of course, The Crystal Bucket. His autobiographies encouraged me to visit England in my youth and May Week Was in June led me to choose Cambridge as my base. Very sad to hear of the continued serious illness of one of my favourite writers and broadcasters. I can also recommend his many volumes of essays – Snakecharmers in Texas is superb

  2. I lived one street away from the James family home in Kogarah. I also went to the same high school as Clive, albeit in different years. As a kid my schoolfriends and I used to read his books, then track down the places he talked about. This was all pre-internet of course, when people did things like read books and go for walks. Oh to be young again…

  3. So many of his books have been preferred reading in our house throughout the years. His writing style and way with words are exceptional and I still have a chuckle when I recall some of his ‘Unreliable Memoirs’.
So much of his early life as a child creating havoc in Kogarah closely resembled some of the mischief I was guilty of at the same age.

Hang in there Clive, you’re one in a million.

  4. I love Clive James, and used to love his post card specials all those years ago. He more recently co-hosted The Today Show when they were in London. A shame about his health and never being able to come home again.
