6:30pm GEM
It’s the clash voters and viewers have been waiting for: Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbott, head to head, in the first televised debate of the 2013 Federal Election campaign.

It’s their pitch for the top job, and you can see The Great Debate live and commercial-free on GEM at 6.30pm AEST on Sunday night, in the run-up to the action from the fourth Ashes test.

Viewers in Perth will see the debate from 4.30pm, LIVE on Nine.

Hosted by Karl Stefanovic, The Great Debate sees the return of The Worm, and a studio audience of 100 undecided voters who will give their verdict on the performance of the two candidates.

There will be expert analysis from Nine’s Political Editor Laurie Oakes, along with former Rudd adviser Lachlan Harris and Coalition veteran Amanda Vanstone.

Viewers will be able to watch their comments and questions going to air during the debate via Twitter, using the hashtag: #YouDecide9

Darren Wick, Nine’s Director of News and Current Affairs, said: “This is the first chance voters have to see the two leaders go head to head, and it could cost either of them precious votes. We’re giving viewers a real chance to be part of the debate.

“We expect #YouDecide9 to be trending on Twitter as Mr Rudd and Mr Abbott speak. Comments and questions will go to air live during the debate. And we’re very pleased to welcome back The Worm. It’s a toss-up who the politicians fear the most, The Worm or Laurie Oakes, and we’ll have both with us on the night to give their verdict.”

Host Karl Stefanovic said: “This will be brutal, it will be bloody, and the decision of The Worm will be final. There’s no use for a decision review system in this game.”

The debate will also be streamed live at youdecide9.ninemsn.com.au

6:30 ONE
As Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbott square off in the first live debate of the election campaign, only on ONE will you be able tell us – and them – who you #Believe.

ONE is partnering with Twitter to run a live poll during the debate, with viewers able to use Twitter to tell us whether they #BelieveRudd or #BelieveAbbott.

ONE will show, on screen, how the candidates are tracking during the debate and who “Tweeters” have declared most believable.

Viewers comments made via Twitter, will also be shown on air.

  1. Congrats to SBS Two who provided a 100% clean feed. No twitter streams, no tickers, not even a channel water mark.

GEM on the other hand didn’t even have the decency to show the press club in full screen.

Of course SBS Two probably rated sixth out of the six channels broadcasting the debate which would prove that people don’t care about clean feeds any more :/

  2. Surprised that Ten are showing it on One, I don’t think One have ever screened a news broadcast before, and it definitely is more of Ten’s new target demo.

  3. Finally something in HD on ONE, GEM and ABC24 but it’s the damn election debate! Guess the commercial networks don’t want to interrupt there regular Sunday programing on the main channels.

  4. Patrick Lion of News Limited doesn’t really understand that shows on the digi multi channels are no longer really ‘punted’ into obscurity. Times are changing and the Ashes have proven that people will go to the multi channels if they are interested. I’m enjoying this cultural shift.

  5. yes abc go to show it
ABC News will host the first leaders debate for the Federal Election this Sunday at 6.30pm AEST on ABC1 and ABC News 24 live from the National Press Club Canberra.

ABC1’s schedule for eastern states on Sunday 11 August:
    ABC News 6pm
    Australia Votes Leaders Debate 6.30pm
    Local news 7.30pm
    Grand Designs Revisited 8pm
The Time Of Our Lives 8.45pm.

  6. I assume ABC will show it on News 24, as they have their state news editions on at 7pm. Interesting that neither nine or seven aren’t showing it on their main channels.

  7. Now if one of the networks would commit to event television live across the country (I’m in Perth) that would be great. That’s why I like ABC news 24 for these things…

  8. Do Channel Ten also have the right to show the debate? If so, they should definitely show this on their main channel.

There are lots of viewers who simply ignore the digital channels, so being the only commercial network with coverage might give the network a point of difference.

If nothing else it would provide a better lead in for Masterchef then two Modern Family repeats.
