Offspring death “a gift for an actor”

“It’s a bit of a gift for an actor to have an exit like this,” says Matthew Le Nevez.

2013-08-14_0038Matthew Le Nevez has spoken about the dramatic death for Patrick Reid in last week’s episode of Offspring, which triggered widespread reactions from fans across the country.

“The response has been very strong,” he said. “A lot of people have come up to hug me to make sure that I am alive, or people have asked for a photo so that they can send it to their mother or wife to prove that I am alive!”

“It’s a bit of a gift for an actor to have an exit like this,” he said.

“I’ve done that many other jobs that either no one’s ever seen or the way that the character’s left is a little bit innocuous or tepid or whatever, and when it’s something like this and you’ve struck a chord, it’s nice.”

Le Nevez said he was unprepared for the reaction to the death last week, and was bemused by the constant references to Molly from A Country Practice.

“That’s the one everyone seems to talk about, the big death on television,” he said.

“Whether people hold onto it or not, I’m really proud of [Offspring], and especially that finale episode. Asher [Keddie] and Kate [Jenkinson] who plays my sister did some incredible work. I’m there lying on the table while they’re grieving and I watched it for the first time with fresh eyes last week and I just thought they were fantastic.”

In tonight’s season finale Nina Proudman faces both a funeral and a birth, both of which are likely to draw another social media outpouring.

  1. I agree, this is gift for an actor of his quality, while sad that he is gone as in alive, I love that he will be involved occasionally with Nina’s awake dreams etc. Matthew has being an actor to watch and I hope he does what other Aussie successful actors do which is keep in touch with Australia when he is huge of in America. What he has is something actors have or haven’t, that ability to emotionally connect with viewers.
