Offspring: What did you think?

AEST Spoilers: I'm opening a post for you to respond to tonight's Offspring episode. Don't click if you haven't watched!

2013-08-06_2000_001I’ve decided to open a post on tonight’s Offspring episode in order for you to share your thoughts.

Comments are being approved tonight.

It was a helluva big move by the show and some of Asher Keddie’s finest moments. Some of her scenes (incl next week) were filmed the morning after she won the Gold Logie. A very big ask.

A full interview with producers John Edwards and Imogen Banks on why the story has taken this path will feature on Thursday morning, to avoid spoiling WA viewers.

  1. I’m sure we’ll all get over Patrick leaving the show, we all managed with Dr Chris departed. Great show, I’m really looking forward to the next episode, Asher and Kat will be at their best, no doubt.

  2. Per poll on site, I voted yes because I think to kill a loved one off a favourite show, without warning, would be more shocking and harder to deal with. At least we could speculate and steel ourself that something tragic would happen and sort of be prepared.

  3. The promo was bad, it goes for all promos of shows these days, everything is given away. If this episode wasn’t promoted in this way it wouldn’t have rated half of what it got because there was nothing else in the episode worth promoting. Look at the promo for the final episode, probably every key moment is given away, even when the baby is out.

  4. I may be in the minority.. but I’m glad the promos said someone would die.

I usually watch offspring on catch up and I would have hated to have been spoiled before I had a chance to watch it.. and judging by the attention it’s been getting today it would have been pretty much impossible to remain unspoiled.

But, I do think the split screen graphic with the three people was unnecessary. Just say someone leaves forever and that would have been enough.

  5. I am very sad that Patrick died on Offspring. I feel for Nina and also for the baby who is never going to know his/her dad too. RIP Patrick.
I also felt it was great acting last night from everyone involved and I didn’t have any problem with the promos either.
I hope Matthew does well in the US. He is a great actor and I bet it won’t be long before he gets another acting gig.

  6. If there wasn’t a season 5 already announced, I think they should have ended season 4 with Nina and Patrick having their child being born and wrapping up the series on a high note.
It will be interesting to see how Nina copes next season.

Brillant acting by Asher and Kate

  7. I think the promos were well done. I think they need to promote the fact of a death in the show so that new viewers will come onboard, see what the show is about and hopefully continue to stay after they see it and then the show can go on and on for longer as it will have lots of viewers.

The fact they gave us a choice of 3 people who were potentially going to die was not a poor choice. It was smartly done, well executed and made me want to watch the show even more.

I am a 26 year old male who loves Offspring and i’m hetero. Figure that out!

Also, the show made me watch and even after Patrick was hit by the car it still made of think it was Billie that was going to die. I mean, getting hit by a car the way he did was no way he was going to die but who knew!! Kept me guessing right till the doctor came out and said he didn’t survive the procedure.

    Great promotion 10 and…

  8. Really poor promos. It made me watch the episode as a guessing game rather than viewing the story arc. I feel like we were robbed of the story by the promos.

  9. People might criticise Ten for the way they promoted the episode but the hype was built and there would surely have been more viewers than usual tuning in, as a result.

  10. I agree with the other commenters that the 3 week build up and the split screen teaser with 3 beloved characters removed genuine shock and distress for me anyway. It seemed to be heading for Billie (which would have devastated this viewer). The standout was Kate Jenkinson as the sister. Asher’s performance is always good. And the whole hour was gruelling. The writers may not be happy with the promotional machine, but did the producers have no input to the promo producers’ choices?

  11. Fair comment, David. Perhaps I might have seen it differently had the pre-promotion not painted the episode in such a way – not helped by such phrases like “the episode that will be talked about in years to come”. I mean, really, people still talk about the bomb that went off in Number 96. I don’t think people will be talking about Dr Patrick in 40 years time. I should have remembered that Ten has form in promoting something that doesn’t equate to the episode in question.

  12. Just read an article saying that the writers were really disappointed with the Ten promos – they thought there was too much build up and it took away the shock for the viewer to sympathize with the shock Nina would be feeling.

  13. While I don’t watch the show, everyone else in the family does, and I had seen the adverts. I found it a little funny the actor was in an episode of The Glade this week in the US. I know that doesn’t mean anything but kinda had a clue who was gonna die without knowing anything about the show.

  14. I think the writers should have looked up “Number 96 deli bomb” or “E Street car bomb” to see how to plot a suspence-filled episode that left you guessing right to the end. This just seemed fairly anti-climatic because we saw so much of Patrick in the episode and hardly anything of the other two so it was pretty much a given which one was going to go.

    1. Let’s be fair. Blame TEN promos not the writers. If you hadn’t known somebody was going to expire it was totally suspenseful. It would be like a normal weekly episode and suddenly the love of her life is erased. But we were watching knowing someone was going.

  15. Is it true that Yahoo!7 News broke the story while the episode was still airing and possibly before Patrick had even been hit by the car?

I must be honest and say that I cried fairly hysterically.

  16. Would have had much more impact had ten downplayed the advertising. The whole episode was just about waiting for the moment you figured it out. The episode was just a setup for the final few moments. Saying that I shed a number of tears and wish it had if been any other character although not surprised as I have found the character of Patrick to be quite peripheral this season serving very little purpose.

  17. Really sad to read that patrick has died. So sad. I’m actually a few episodes behind and am trying to catch up on tens website but its not working now on two different browsers. Not happy channel ten.
