Talent shows battle heats up. “That’s what karma looks like.”

Ratings: Not much separates two talent shows, as Nine sends a message back to Seven after it boasted it was right to dump Australia's Got Talent.

AGT - EP 2 - The Other Superman (2)The talent show battle got extra heated last night as The X Factor and Australia’s Got Talent went head to head for the second week in a row.

Seven stayed in front with 1.38m viewers, up 70,000 on last week. Australia’s Got Talent had 1.21m in preliminary OzTAM figures, but Nine advises a coding error with an afternoon replay will see an adjusted figure of 1.3m viewers, a rise of 256,000 from last week.

A week ago Seven’s Head of Production Brad Lyons said the network had made “the right decision” to axe Australia’s Got Talent, but today Nine spokesman David Hurley told TV Tonight, those comments make “….Brad Lyons look like an absolute chump for his very unwise triumphalism last week congratulating himself on dumping the show. That fairly invited a slap in the mouth with a dead fish, and he got it deluxe this morning. That’s what karma looks like Brad.”

Right now all the drama isn’t on camera, it’s off camera. This is a battle that has already seen one courtroom battle but the audience is yet to close the case.

Regardless of how the talent shows are faring, Seven won the night with a comfy margin.

Seven network was 35.8% then Nine 29.2%, TEN 15.7%, ABC 14.5% and SBS 4.8%.

Seven News topped the night with 1.44m. Next for Seven were The X Factor (1.38m), Sunday Night (1.14m), Bones (772,000) and Castle (325,000).

MasterChef (671,000) led TEN then Modern Family (519,000 / 407,000), Ripper Street (516,000), TEN News (440,000) and Graham Norton (307,000).

Grand Designs Revisted (823,000) was best for ABC1 followed by ABC News (812,000), The Time of our Lives (733,000), Dream Build (717,000), Compass (418,000) and The Iraq War (264,000).

On SBS ONE it was Iceman Autopsy (284,000), World News Australia (193,000), The Observer Effect (106,000) and Movie: The Central Park Five (94,000).

The Big Bang Theory on GO! topped multichannels with 256,000 viewers.

  1. AGT was better last night and quiet enjoyed it but Xfactor will blow it away once the live shows commence. I have to agree that AGT is a good old fashion variety show but Xfactor is more current. Cannot wait for Jessie J to appear on the first live show.

  2. Battle what battle its a one horse race x factor has been over 1.3 and 1.6 million viewers since it started the race is over . The live shows havent even started on the X Factor yet..AGT is boooooring

  3. For me the best thing about the X Factor is that it discovers unknown talent . And this years crop is truely amazing . The talent is extrodinary. Plus getting redfoo is a stroke of genius . I could not stand mel b .redfoo is a legend and having will I AM and kylie minogue ,jon bon jovi. Its a brilliant show. and the ratings prove it . Its a ratings juggernaut . AGT is booring and i can not stand kyle sandilands.AGT is struggling now wait till the live shows start on the X Factor it will cream AGT .

  4. Why is David Hurley gloating. I mean they are still behind the X factor. I dont want this to come out the wrong way but did people watch AGT because ch9 heavily promoted the man in the wheelchair doing his act. The x factor will still beat them especially when the numbers come down.

Underbelly has gone right down. I think people are over it.

Im still laughing at there comments from a couple of years ago when they said Australian Top Gear will be the number 1 show

  5. I have always thought that Nine had the right judges & host for AGT. It has put the focus on the contestants quite rightly & not the host trying to steal all their thunder. Those who say their is no chemistry are watching a different show to me. Dawn & Geri are longtime friends & have even collaborated together. Timomatic & even Kyle have surprised.
As Dawn French said last night ‘this is a variety show’ & Nine have the history to do variety. After all this is just a revamp of New Faces which Nine had for many years.
The bits of X Factor I saw last night during ad breaks were more focused on the judges than the contestants. They all got about 2 mins worth of air time.
AGT is definately more like the UK & US versions that I have seen & I think Nine has been very wise in getting AGT.

  6. @James, they lack genuine chemistry – it almost feels like it is very forced and at times very uncomfortable to watch. I find it difficult as a viewer to be convinced that what they say,do and interact to come across as genuine and that also means who they are sitting with. Loved AGT before and irrespective of what people think of Brian and Kyle bromance, they worked. Talent wise nothing particularly special either with a very few exceptions. But you need to have a good balance of acts and judges to make this work – and for me it didnt…

  7. The problem with X Factor is that it’s just another singing show. The good thing about AGT is that it’s good, old-fashioned variety entertainment. There’s no other show like it.

  8. isn’t Hurley doing exactly what he is criticising Lyons for? X factors last two Sunday episodes were boring, and it was clear it was going to be that way from the first few minutes. could be a different story

not surprised to see SN trail 60. Peter Fitzsimons story about joe hockey was horrible. running over 2 commercial breaks. political stories are ratings poison as it is, but that was just sickly mens club fodder. it a shame because people probably tuned out and didn’t return for Rahni Saddler’s story on the side effects of roaccutane, which was very good with an important message.

  9. @sydpt6, No chemistry?? Are you watching the same AGT that I am? The judges boast about the number of group hugs they have for every occasion, and Kyle and Dawn have even done a “Brangalina” thingy and come up with a name for themselves; “Frandliands”. And unlike other shows, all of the judges get along with each other. So I am a bit confused as to why you think that there is a lack of chemistry..?

  10. Noticed mc last night asking for contestants on next yrs show.
Ten’s sundays are so not working and I don’t know how they can call them super at all.

  11. Do not like AGT on Nine… there doesnt seem to be much chemistry and the talent is a bit sub-par with a few exception… miss it again… i so want to like it but find it quiet bland…

  12. David, I don,t think this statement is correct re the X Factor. “Seven stayed in front with 1.38m viewers, up 700,000 on last week.” That would mean that XF rated only 680,000 last week.

  13. AGT is finally the show it was supposed to be after all these years. It showcases the contestants not the judges. The judges are actually nice and don’t argue with eachother.

On Seven it was initially a Red Faces clone, then a bitchfest between judges whilst random acts were performing. It now matches the UK & US versions.

  14. I wish we could all get along like we used to in middle school… I wish I could bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles and everyone would eat and be happy…

  15. When i saw the ratings the first thing I thought of is what an idiot that guy is for coming out 1 week in and saying it was a failure.

Regardless of what happens from now he still looks like an idiot.

AGT was actually quite good last night. Im over X-factor Dani is to much of a turn off. Id rather watch Kyle and that says something, doesn’t it?

  16. All these talent shows are exactly the same! How can they possibly argue one is better or worse than the other when the differences are tiny and superficial, and they’re constantly imitating each other anyway? The ratings for each seem to be randomly associated with who the contestants each happens to have that year, and possibly who the Judges are.

Their obsession with ratings is messing with their heads.

  17. Hahaha love the quote from David Hurley. I’m really enjoying AGT. Dawn, Julia & Kyle are brilliant Don’t mind Geri, but she’s a bit too indecisive. Timomatic likes to blow his own trumpet – thinks he’s too big a deal.

Loved it when the Geri fan told him – “I actually don’t know any of your songs..” LOL

  18. Did not expect AGT to rise. I think it’s silly to have XF/Sunday Night and AGT/60 Minutes going head to head when all these shows have the potential to get better numbers if programmed away from each other. But both networks should be pleased today.
