2013-09-23_1620On Friday night the History Channel screens a two hour special on legendary author H.G. Wells.

Shame it isn’t narrated by Orson Welles or Richard Burton, but one for fans of science fiction nevertheless…

H.G. Wells wrote his four best-known works, The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man and The Island of Dr. Moreau in the space of just four years in his early 30s. His fame only increased with the eerily prophetic nonfiction writing that followed. Wells predicted the invention of tanks, nuclear war, biological warfare, television and the Internet. And his celebrity status not only enabled him to pursue free love but provided him with unprecedented access to world leaders like Roosevelt and Stalin.

Using Wells’s own words, this documentary tells the extraordinary story of the prophetic writer and father of modern science fiction, including his transformation from self-confident womaniser and socialist radical to burdened missionary, dedicated to creating a world state that would avert humankind’s headlong course toward imminent annihilation.

H.G. Wells: War with the World Friday September 27 at 8.30pm on History.
