FOX secures new ‘Batman’ series, Gotham.

A new series will explore the origins of Batman's Commissioner Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous.

2013-09-26_0117US network FOX has landed Gotham, a new Batman-universe series created by Bruno Heller (The Mentalist), which explores the origins of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains who made Gotham City famous.

This marks the first series featuring a character from the world of Batman in a long time. To be produced by Warner Bros., this should presumably air in Australia on Nine as part of their WB output deal.

In Gotham, Gordon is still a detective with the Gotham City Police Department and has yet to meet Batman, who will not be part of the series.  Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Commissioner Gordon has appeared in comic books as well as Batman films and series, including in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, where he was played by Gary Oldman.

Gotham is the second high-profile WBTV/DC drama in the works, along with Flash at the CW network.
