Hot Seat back in front of Million Dollar Minute

Ratings: Eddie's game show is now rating above Grant's at 5:30.

hsmcguireAfter just three nights, Nine’s Hot Seat has taken back its mantle in the 5:30 game show battle, while curiosity in Million Dollar Minute diminishes.

Seven’s game show pulled 811,000 on Monday but it’s now at 550,000. Nine’s game show was 674,000 on Monday and last night pulled 599,000. TV execs are more than familiar with the “J curve” trend of show’s launching big, then immediately falling away before staging and inch by inch comeback, and that’s what they will be hoping for here. Of course, strictly speaking TEN Eyewitness News won the 5-6 hour with 638,000.

Meanwhile The Bachelor‘s move from Sunday to Wednesday was wise, lifting from 576,000 to 656,000 and proving more competitive. Significantly, it even topped the 16-39 demos and was second in 18-49. Not so fortunate was This Week Live. At just  259,000 it’s now lower than their afternoon numbers for The Bold and The Beautiful and Judge Judy.

Seven Network won the night with a share of 28.2% then Nine 27.2%, ABC 21.3%, TEN 18.7% and SBS 4.6%.

Seven News topped the night with 1.16m for Seven then Today Tonight (936,000), Home and Away (876,000), SlideShow (765,000), Just for Laughs (591,000), Million Dollar Minute (550,000) and Deal or No Deal (276,000).

Nine News (1.16m) was best for Nine followed by A Current Affair (913,000), Big Brother (819,000 / 763,000),  Arrow (618,000 / 473,000), and Hot Seat (599,000).

Gruen Planet (988,000) and ABC News (914,000) both won their timeslots for ABC1. 7:30 was 799,000, Qi was 788,000, Julia Zemiro’s Home Delivery was 699,000 and Adam Hills: The Last Leg was 409,000.

The Bachelor (656,000) was best for TEN then TEN Eyewitness News (638,000), Wonderland (637,000), The Project (588,000). The Simpsons was 352,000 but This Week Live slumped to just 259,000.

SBS ONE has a tough night with Charlie Boorman’s Extreme Frontiers (172,000), World News Australia (165,000), Edwardian Insects on Film (161,000) and The Killing (106,000).

ABC2’s Fireman Sam (336,000) led multichannels.

Sunrise: 348,000
Today: 295,000
ABC News Breakfast:  63,000 / 41,000

  1. Channel Seven will be hoping that nobody wins the million dollars. The last show they had that featured such a prize was a UK format called Minute to Win It. It was sold to Seven with the promise that it was impossible to win the million dollars so Seven made an Australian version. Six episodes in, somebody won the million dollars. Apparently Kerry Stokes was furious and phoned the producers saying the program had been axed.

  2. When will Aussie TV realise that if you have a panel show of comedians who have been on every other panel show with comedians that people will soon tire of it or just not tune in at all.
MDM sounds like it was put together by committee (haven’t watched it myself) a little of Sale of the Century/Temptation with Million Dollar in the title…Maybe Grant Denyer shouldn’t have said how game shows were beneath him in interviews…Hope this will signal the end of his career as Slide Show doesn’t seem to be holding on to ratings either.

  3. I agree with alvar, MDM is the most boring game show in years, even worse than Slideshow, as a TV format writer these shows lack viewer and audience interaction. A show called Travel 2 Win has all the makings of a top rating show, if you would like a copy of the format please let me know here.

  4. Have not watched MDM because I like Hot Seat too much to bother. But if the ratings keep declining they should give Sale Of The Century a go. It is a proven winner. If Tony Barber does ok on DWTS he might even get another go at it.

  5. Surprisingly good was the Julia Zemiro program featuring Alan Brough, I enjoyed that far more than “Gruen”(which I think is running out of steam, as are Wil Anderson’s jokes).

  6. One problem with Million Dollar Minute is that you don’t always hear what the rest of the question was when a contestant answers early. Viewers at home like to know the full question even if contestant answers early.

On Temptation they used to always complete the question so you’d always know what the question was that was answered.

  7. I think an Australian version of The Cube could work well. It’s basically a stripped back version of Minute To Win It where contestants are given simple yet strange tasks to perform in a cube. It’s quite exciting and fast paced and fun to watch.

  8. The pace of MDM is probably too fast for the average viewers. The fast pace and a lack of a live studio audience, such as friends and families of contestants, also prevent the build-up of tension and excitement. Chattering between the host, contestants, and their supporters can make more interesting viewing.
Also, contestants on MDM need to win like eight nights to reach 1 million. Hot Seat on the other hand has the advantage of being easier to give away bigger prize money by giving hints to contestants.
As for Ten, see, you should have launched the Bachelor on Wednesday.

  9. Million Dollar Minute is a fraud. Watched it the last two nights and just shows channel 7 treat the audience with contempt. Fooling us that a millions dollars will be won in an episode when it takes many episodes won to get to the million dollar minute. Typical channel 7 trying to fool us all. The audience is to smart for your petty games. My family will be watching Hot Seat as Eddie comes across honest and a master of game shows. It’s high quality and treats the audience with respect. Channel 7 is doomed for many years to come. A bit like the Labor party after playing to many tricks the people wake up and see the light!

  10. Good to see slight improvements in Ten’s programs.
A pity that TWL hasn’t been able to gather an audience, but the panel doesn’t seem to gel & it’s almost like a mini Project.

  11. TWL just rotates through the same comedians that are on the other 10 shows – The Project, Before The Game etc. There’s nothing remotely unique about this show – it’s like a late version of The Panel without the news. Yes there are some funny people on there, but unless there is something unique about it you can just watch The Project.

  12. Really want TWL to survive. but last nights ep was not good at all……Agree with Kimbeth…..Better guests, Mix of Topics Sport / politics/ of the week. Stop trying to be funny every second.

The Panel had a good dose of content variety in the 90’s

Another figure like that at it could be “see ya later” Which would be a shame.

    Gee I miss “Enough Rope”.

  13. SlideShow’s numbers are pretty disappointing. I would love to see it come back next year as I believe it’s great light hearted fun. I doubt Seven will but with the decline in ratings.

  14. Hot Seat is a better format. I watched the first episode of MDM and I agree with other commenters here – too much like Temptation/Sale of the Century although the format is worse.

Surprisingly I liked Grant Denyer as the host and didn’t find him as annoying as he is on AGT and SlideShow – but the show itself is rather dull. Also This Week Live needs to be axed those figures are horrendous

  15. Watched Million Dollar Minute on Tuesday and wasn’t overly impressed. Yes there are more questions but they go through them so quickly viewers at home have no time to try and answer them themselves. I much prefer Hot Seat in that respect.

  16. I thought Ten could leave This Week Live in its slot until the end of the ratings year but on these continuing numbers, I would say they should call it quits now.

Also Ten used to show Just for Laughs and it would get mediocre results. Seven show it and get the same mediocre results.
