Renewed?: The Newsroom

"It's official. #Newsroom coming back for a Season 3," Jeff Daniels tweets. Update: Or is it?

2013-09-05_0948Actor Jeff Daniels has tweeted that The Newsroom has been renewed by HBO.

“It’s official. #Newsroom coming back for a Season 3,” he wrote.

While there is no official word from HBO, the news comes a month after HBO programming president Michael Lombardo noted publicly that he’d be “shocked” if the series didn’t return.

“We’re enormously happy with the show,” he said in late July.

This season has included an overarching legal storyline that spans all nine episodes, inspired by a 1998 CNN news segment alleging, among other things, that the U.S. had used sarin nerve gas that killed more than 100 men, women and children in Laos during the Vietnam War. The report was later discredited.

While the first season was most definitely uneven in terms of its writing, I think I preferred it to the current batch of one longer yarn.

Season Two is currently screening on Showcase.

UPDATE: Did Daniels jump the gun (Will McAvoy might be horrified)? Buzzfeed suggests HBO holding the actors’ contracts is not the same as a renewal. HBO has since issued a statement, reiterating that the show has not yet been renewed: “We are excited about proceeding to a Season 3 and are continuing our conversations with Aaron (Sorkin) about schedules.”

  1. The flip-flopping between flashbacks, the present, and then other flashbacks (I lost track – I was using Maggie’s hair as an indicator of time, but then she’d grown it back??), it has been very hard to follow this season.

  2. I loved season 1 and although I still love season 2 it just isn’t as good, with the jumping between flashbacks becoming very annoying. I think episode 4 was the worst with Maggie flashing back and forth about the little boy, at one time seeing a flash of reading to the boy on the bus when really he died and that never happened. But then you watch episode 5 where it is like an ep from season 1 and it hooks you back in. If it does get renewed I hope they drop these jumps.

  3. I preferred season 1, I must say I was looking forward to watching the team deal with hurricane sandy and the election. Hopefully a third season will inprove
