Rumour: Rove to revive Blankety Blanks?

Could Rove McManus front a revival of Graham Kennedy's hit game show for TEN'?

2013-09-09_1349With the game-show genre getting more attention, could Blankety Blanks be next up for a revival?

The latest rumour, which comes via Peter Ford on 3AW, speculates that Rove McManus might be set to front a new version of Blankety Blanks for TEN.

The classic game show ran on TEN from 1977–1981 with Graham Kennedy as host and panelists including Ugly Dave Gray, Noeline Brown, Carol Raye and Stuart Wagstaff.

That version put catchphrases into the Aussie vernacular including, “Did Dick?”, “Dick did!” and has been replayed on Foxtel.

The FremantleMedia format was revived twice on Nine for short runs, first with Daryl Somers in 1985 then with Shane Bourne in 1996.

Yesterday McManus and wife Tasma Walton announced they were expecting their first child, fuelling speculation the couple may be looking to spend more time in Australia.

Blankety Blanks could be under consideration as a viable 6pm project for TEN, helping to give a stronger lead-in to The Project, produced by one Roving Enterprises of course.

  1. @ Hebblew – how many ways can you spell “Norton?”
@ josh777 – what fantasy land has Rove Live in the top 20?

IMHO – Rove is a limited talent. Does not have the ability to do “off the cuff” hosting. Needs an irontight script. He is up there with Daryl Somers as far as hosting goes. Unfunny.

  2. In the UK when they revived Blankety Blanks they had Paul O’Grady host as his alter ego Lily Savage and it was fantastic (1997-2002), so perhaps as a host Mark Trevorrow as his alter ego Bob Downe would hit the spot better to make it as irreverent as before.

  3. I loved the original and would certainly give a re-boot a go. The key to the original was the fun aspect between the host and the panel and if they can get the panel right, it could work today.

  4. This type of humor is quite enjoyable a little naughty and rude but a bit of a chuckle, unsure if the modern Australian audience would find it funny or the moral outrage from whatever interest group would kill it.
This is a little bit of the same style humor which is in all the UK good chat shows Alan Carr, and Graham Norton(spelling?), I wish we had the Australian equivalent (no not rove)

  5. The original was legendary. What made it so outstanding was not knowing what Graham was going to do next. It was entertainment rather than a game show. There is a reason why the remakes on Nine where not a success as they were just a normal game shows. IMHO the only person who could host it would be Shaun Mc….but cannot see that happening unfortunately – it would be great. But love the format and would be good to see Rove back on Oz TV.
