tenplay offers Homeland premiere live with US broadcast

Is this a first? You can legally watch the season premiere of Homeland online, as it airs in the US.

homeland_302Here’s some news that appears to be an Australian first…

TEN is offering the Season 3 premiere of Homeland for viewing in Australia while it is still on air in the US.

In a move that trumps other “Fastracking”, TEN’s new catch-up service tenplay, will offer the premiere just 15 minutes after its debut on the West Coast of America.

The streaming will commence at 2.15pm AEST on Monday, September 30 (1.45pm Adelaide and 12.15pm in Perth). Viewers will be asked to register for viewing.

That means Homeland will be still be on air in the US while Australian viewers get started -that’s even better than Foxtel’s afternoon premieres of cable dramas, just hours after the US.

While we’ve enjoyed live broadcasts of events such as the Oscars and Emmys, this appears to be the first online ‘simulcast’ of scripted drama. The episode has its terrestrial broadcast at 8:30pm later on Monday.

TEN is yet to announce full details of its improved catch-up service but tenplay promises to make content available “anytime, anywhere and on any device.”

The Homeland ‘simulcast’ is believed to be a one-off event rather than a weekly strategy, but as a marketing exercise it’s a great idea.

  1. Doctor Who was only on iView after it had aired in the UK. Mind you it could be said since this was on during the US West Coast airing that it had already aired on the East coast 2 hours earlier.

I want to know something, TEN has the EPG for this tonight at 1 hour long, so either they are wrong or not planning any ad breaks as this is just under 1 hour playing time tonight.

  2. Not quite true Paulo- The Eleventh Hour was placed on iView directly after the UK broadcast. Homeland will be broadcast online while it is still being broadcast in the US (West Coast.)

  3. i wonder why they are doing this i mean yes homeland is such a amazing show but is ten doing this because they know that homeland is going to get killed by watching the black list

  4. Ten are giving away an episode to try and generate future viewings.

They are hoping it will get more younger viewers into Homeland during the School Holidays, because they figure it will get smashed by The X Factor/ James Spader’s Black List on Seven.

And with the streaming along with other numbers Ten will get some idea of the theoretical maximum amount you could increase viewers by deterring illegal downloading with fast-tracking.

My guess is it still a lot less than from programming well in prime-time when people want to watch the show.

  5. I am sure that i am not the only one to notice this but you know TEN is strugling for new ideas when they cant even name their tv catch up service with a name that hasnt been used already. TENPlay is basically the same as FoxtelPlay. Real subtle TEN.

  6. Will this have ads throughout or just be a straight run? I understand that Ten needs to get as many eyeballs on this show as possible at launch to try and build an audience, but can they really afford to lose a few thousand viewers at primetime when their ratings are already so poor?

  7. This is a good move by TEN. I for one have been urging TEN through my comments on this site to have a better digital content strategy rather then just hope that things work themselves out. As long as they are using all their content from thier output deals then this will be succesful, As i have said they can even make it a subscription service if people do not want ads or just a free streaming service with ads similar to broadcast. Content is king if you have the rights to shows that people want and you make it available then poeple will watch and revenue will grow.

  8. Very interesting. On Ten’s catch-up service, is this on their website or an app? They “retired” their Ten and Ten Sport iPhone apps in June and I am still waiting for new ones to be released – which seems stupid to remove apps before new ones are ready.

  9. I hope they now include a PS3 Viewing App.
ABC, SBS and 7 already have one.
Or another App for Smart TV’s as It seems a bit useless to go buy a TV and then not be able to watch TV services.

  10. Yeah, can’t watch stuff on my computer as my internet is way too slow, think I would prefer to watch it on my bigger TV screen than my computer screen any way.
