Wentworth Miller shares more on his private life

Wentworth Miller has spoken more about some of the difficult times growing up gay and being in the spotlight.

2013-09-09_1512Actor and writer Wentworth Miller has made further comments following his recent coming out as a gay man.

Speaking at a Human Rights Campaign gala on the weekend, the former Prison Break star described an incident where he overdosed on pills while his parents were away from home.

“The first time I tried to kill myself I was 15,” he said. “I waited until my family went away for the weekend and I was alone in the house and I swallowed a bottle of pills. I don’t remember what happened over the next couple days, but I’m pretty sure come Monday morning I was on a bus back to school pretending everything was fine. And when someone asked me if that was a cry for help, I say no, because I told no one.”

He also spoke about the pressure of media interviews while promoting Prison Break.

“I had multiple opportunities to speak my truth, which was that I was gay,” he said. “But I chose not to. I was out in private, to family and friends … but professionally, publicly, I was not.”

Miller declined an invitation to attend a film festival in Russia after President Vladimir Putin recently signed laws banning the promotion of gay, lesbian or bisexual lifestyles. The Sochi Winter Olympics are expected to come under increased pressure from the gay and lesbian community.

He recently wrote the screenplay for the film Stoker, starring Mia Wasikowska.

  1. So nglad he did come through all his personal demons with being gay.He is a wonderful actor and I so appreciate his honesty regarding his coming to terms with being gay.I wonder if religion played a part in his wishing he wasn’t gay?

  2. It’s so sad that he went through such a horrific time & so important to run these stories – makes us think twice before judging someone as just a “tv hunk”. These people are role models whether they like it or not & his story is important.

  3. I had absolutely no idea he was gay! I agree with Nik. Everyone’s journey is personal and one must be ready within themselves to be ready to talk about it, especially when part of the journey was so incredibly tough. I might actually have to go back and watch Prison Break now coz I completely overlooked it when it was out.

    1. It’s an aggregated story, not one of mine. It’s important we hear how a story of how a young gay man went on to become a success story after such despair. But I didn’t think it was necessary to run with the suicide headline. A bit too sensationalist….

  4. Good on him for speaking about it now!
I know celebrities receive criticism for not coming out sooner, however everyone’s journey is personal and I appreciate the effort he has made now.
