SBS On Demand adds first Android app

SBS On Demand is now available on Samsung devices with other Android handsets to follow.

2013-10-04_1324SBS has announced its first Android app for SBS On Demand, available on Samsung devices (OS 4.0+ and above), with other Android handsets to follow.

SBS Chief Digital Officer, Marshall Heald, said: “This launch really cements SBS’s position as a leader in the online space, with SBS’s catch-up viewing service – SBS On Demand – available across more platforms than that of any other broadcaster.

“This launch follows extensive device testing, in the first phase of a roll-out across Android devices. SBS On Demand will be progressively available on other Android handsets.

“SBS On Demand already attracts over five million views per month. This latest move to Android devices, starting with Samsung, is only going to help boost those numbers, allowing SBS to reach the growing audience of Australians who are hungry for great content on the go.”

SBS On Demand offers free, unlimited access to programs and clips, so audiences can watch their favourite SBS shows, whenever they want.

Users can search for or browse thousands of videos, and discover documentaries, feature films, food shows and much more. Users’ favourite videos can be added to a personal Playlist, to view at a later time. Plus, if signed in with an SBS On Demand account, viewers will be able to access their Playlist across all devices on which SBS ON DEMAND is available.

Other features include a program subscription tool, allowing audiences to stay up to date, with new episodes automatically added to their Playlist. Notifications will alert viewers when a new subscription video has been added, or when a Playlist video is about to expire. Users can also find out which programs are coming soon to SBS On Demand, and add them so that they will automatically be included in their Playlist once available.

The App features adaptive video quality, meaning videos automatically adjust to available bandwidth and network conditions. Videos may also be shared with friends via Twitter, Facebook or email.

This App is designed for devices running Android OS 4.0+ and above (Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean). For a full list of support devices, please visit the Samsung App store.

  1. @ Bogues. Pity Seven’s content is still pithy on it’s Plus 7 app, but still ahead of the game when compared to TenPlay which has bugger all content and Nine which can’t be bothered.

  2. Although only available through the Samsung apps store like Foxtel Go, no doubt it will be available in time via the google play store. For a first outing on Android, this verision 1.0.3 has been rock solid for me on my Samsung Galaxy S3 smatphone. I only discovered it by accident on Friday 4th when updating other apps through the Samsung app store. I am surprised SBS has not made much noise about this much anticipated SBS On Demand app release. Now if only the ABC could get iView accross to Android, I would be in nirvana.

  3. Works well thanks SBS. Maybe one day ABC will get their sh*t together with an official app they’ve promised for two years. Sure we can use alternatives like Aview – but if one guy can do it in their spare time, surely it’s not that hard to get an official app.

  4. I like SBS On Demand (because I like SBS programming) but “thousands of videos” is, in my opinion, one of the problems with it. They have hundreds and hundreds of trailers and very short video clips on there. It makes for a cluttered interface. I wish they’d keep episodes up for longer and do away with all the content padding.

Last I heard ABC iview is undergoing a massive improvement programme. Thats why they needed extra funding in the budget specified just for iview. I assume this will just be one of the improvements when the project is finished.
