Angela Lansbury: Hands off Murder, She Wrote

"I think it's a mistake to call it Murder, She Wrote," Angela Lansbury says of NBC's remake plans.

2013-03-22_1236Beloved Murder, She Wrote star Angela Lansbury has spoken out against a remake being undertaken by NBC.

And who can blame her?

“I suddenly became a worldwide-known character as Jessica Fletcher and really built an enormous audience, which I have to this day,” the 88-year-old said. “That was the thing that really made me a star in the minds of everybody.”

Lansbury had three Oscar nominations and four Tony Awards when she joined the CBS drama, which aired from 1984 to 1996, earning her 12 consecutive Emmy nominations and international acclaim.

“I think it’s a mistake to call it Murder, She Wrote,” Lansbury said, “because Murder, She Wrote will always be about a Cabot Cove and this wonderful little group of people who told those lovely stories and enjoyed a piece of that place, and also enjoyed Jessica Fletcher, who is a rare and very individual kind of person …

“So I’m sorry that they have to use the title – even though they have access to it and it’s their right.”

The NBC remake will feature Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer, but Lansbury remains critical, if classy.

“I saw her in The Help and thought she was absolutely wonderful, a lovely actress,” Lansbury said. “So I wish her well, but I wish it wasn’t in Murder, She Wrote.

  1. The creator will own the rights to the name and idea.

If you are going to remake then you have to use the name. Name recognition is the only reason why they are remaking it, instead of making another different copy of Miss Marple.

  2. Heavens… If Ms Lansbury wanted to call a spade a spade, Murder She Wrote at Cabot Cove should have been called Miss Marple at St Mary Mead…

and – let’s be honest – Angela became a “producer” of MSW so she’s sure to get some kind of financial kick-back from the reboot.
