The last price rise was in January when it also went up $2.

“While a price rise is not the kind of news we like to pass on, and is a decision that we do not take lightly, we are committed to bringing you the best entertainment experience and investing in the most innovative technology to bring you the shows you love, the way you want to watch them,” it said in a statement to subscribers.

There are changes coming to channels, previously reported, including new and refreshed channels, new music channels and revamped audio channels.

  1. I agree with Quebec, Foxtel is becoming increasingly redundant. My IQ planner used to once be full of recordings I couldn’t keep up with, but now rarely have 1 a week and thats often ABC.

  2. refreshing never improves they just move shows around so people think they are seeing something different.

universal is getting refreshed… bringing old crap to a different channel.

whatever happened to there planned lgbti channel?

  3. Foxtel do this because they can and because they will lose very few subscribers. Most will grumble and threaten to cancel but inertia will prevent them from doing so. It’s the same inertia that has kept Telstra in the fixed-line phone/internet business the last decade.

    @shelltvfan – see choice.com.au/reviews-and-tests/computers-and-online/networking-and-internet/internet/tv-on-the-net.aspx

  4. Dissapointing to have another increase, with the increase in ad’s as well you would think the revenue Foxtel get from that would be enough to keep the price from increasing. Well Foxtel with an increase in price I would like to see a slight decrease in commercials.

With regards to Netflix’s and Hulu I didn’t think we could get these in Australa due to geoblocks.

  5. @ Mr DH – completely agree that pushing out the independents to make a more cost effective service doesn’t seem to be felt by us subscribers! According to reports when Foxtel took over the movie channels they were meant to make a saving of over 30%, and yet we get yet another increase? And I hate how there is not only no competition between STV providers, but that Foxtel is slowly pushing out more and more channel providers and the ACCC doesn’t seem to care! And not adding any additional HD channels this year was a joke! TV1 (soon to be TVH!TS), Arena, 13th St, Universal, Comedy – all deserving of a HD feed yet Foxtel are too cheap to rent additional transponders!

  6. So much for Foxtel’s continual claims that taking over channels from independent suppliers (TV1, SF, Movie Network) will result in lower costs.

Also, there hasn’t been anything really ‘new’ or ‘improved’ on the Foxtel platform for a very, very long time. No channels have been upgraded to HD, only reshuffling of existing content (SF HD replaces MTV Live HD, and MainEvent HD replaced Foxtel 3D). Content is merely shuffled around between various Foxtel O&O channels.

And the sports content for this summer looks very, very depressing. Nothing other than soccer, which doesn’t interest me in the slightest. No Big Bash cricket, and no highlights of the Ashes? Major fail for Fox Sports.

I think I, along with many other people, will be seriously reconsidering my Foxtel subscription!

  7. Great year for foxtel first they got rid of nine movie channels earlier in the year now getting rid of TV1 in january and now putting up the price yet again . I am so glad i got rid of my foxtel .i was sick of all the adds and all those crappy shows. I have netflix and am loving it .

  8. The next price rise will take it through a big psychological barrier for a lot of subscribers ($50/mth). They won’t be in any hurry to make that one happen.

  9. Oh forgot to add the new IQ3 box will earn them another $250 or so for us to upgrade which begs the question,we will never own the box so why sink money into the IQ3?

  10. Oh I remember they said piracy was costing them money, now that it has to some extent has been eliminated, have they passed the savings down….Nope!! keep pushing Foxtel the churn rate will be higher than your new customers

  11. Foxtel needs to tread very carefully in the next few years. They are slowly becoming redundant in the general entertainment field with downloads, Netflix, Hulu, etc. Anecdotally, I know numerous people who grew up with Foxtel and used to watch it non-stop and claimed they couldn’t live without it. When they moved out of home they didn’t bother getting it, rather they just got Netflix or Hulu.
Two price rises within a year is not something they should be doing. And hiding it under the stock standard “bringing you the best service is rubbish. Removing a channel and replacing it with another is not an upgrade.

  12. I understand that with these changes it’ll see an addition of 2 channels (Universal & Smooth) to the essentials pack, but if they are worth a $2 increase shouldn’t the extra pack that originally had Universal as well as MTV Live be reduced by $2? I love my Foxtel but another price increase is rediculous, when all signs point to a decrease needed to increase penetration.

  13. There are no “new” channels as such. They are just refreshing a few of them. I have to pay $2 extra for them to refresh them. Looks like I might have to refresh my channels by reducing my package

  14. I was watching Music Max last night and they played 10, yes TEN commercials in one break. Drastically cut back the commercials Foxtel or you will lose more subscribers.
