Nail biter in Brisbane news battle

Nine and Seven are locked in a dead heat in Brisbane as the tightest News battle since OzTam began in 2001.

Nine News Brisbane QTQAround the rest of the country the News battles were decided some time ago.

Nine has won Sydney and Melbourne, Seven has won Adelaide and Perth.

But in Brissy it is going down to the wire as the tightest News battle since OzTam ratings commenced in 2001.

So far Nine has won 19 weeks and Seven has won 19 weeks -and just two more remain.

The battle is so tight, just 60 viewers split the averages so far this year*: Seven is averaging 253,411 viewers while Nine is averaging 253,351.

While Seven has dominated since 2006, this year Nine improved, noticeably after Seven’s Sharyn Ghidella and Bill McDonald took over reading Sunday to Thursday and long term favourites Kay McGrath and Rod Young were moved to Friday and Saturday.

Last week Seven’s Ben Davis also announced his departure to 4BC to host Drive in 2014, after 18 years with the network.

If the last few weeks are anything to go by, the result is going to go down to viewing numbers on Friday nights.

* Weeks 7 -45 excluding Easter non-ratings.

  1. I grew up watching Kay, when Sharyn joined btq7 the writing was on the wall to be Kay’s replacement. But replacement when Kay & Rod lost their shine, not when they were both clearly No.1, by a large margin I understand too. Replacing Kay & Rod will go down as BTQ7’s biggest blunder. Obviously TPTB forgot what happened when they sacked Mal Walden in Melbourne when he was popular. They deserve everything they’ve got.

  2. I was a long term 7 viewer but switched to 9 when bill McDonald started and they got rid of Kay and rod. Can’t stand bill and only watch 7 on weekends now when I can see Kay.

  3. Andrew and Melissa much more pleasant to watch. Bill and Sharyn just don’t seem to gel. Bring back Kay and Rod. Better still, bring back Sandra Sully to a national bulletin.

  4. Hello David, I want to thank you for this site and the information on it, I was curious as to when you write it, but it’s become clear it’s right now! Thanks for the information. Question, do you think Homeland and Sleepy Hollow get a true reading from Oz Tam? They are both good shows.
