2013-12-26_2218Throughout next week SBS 2 screens a week of monster movies hosted by Marc Fennell (no that’s not him in the picture).

Amongst the flicks you can expect to see Norwegian trolls, a Korean river beast,  Godzilla, science fiction body horror, French zombies in Paris, and ground-breaking werewolf transformations.

Monday, 30 December – 8.40pm: Troll Hunter

Monster Mayhem starts the week with cult favourite Troll Hunter. A group of students investigate a series of mysterious bear killings in the mountains and forests of Norway. Armed with a video camera, they trail a mysterious “poacher,” who wants nothing to do with them. They soon realise that they’re not hunting bears but real life trolls whose existence has been covered up for years by a government conspiracy.

Tuesday, 31 December – 8.40pm: The Host

SBS 2 enjoys monsters more than fireworks so why not celebrate New Year’s by watching slobbery monsters chasing around Korean school girls in The Host.

Wednesday, 1 January – 8.30pm: Godzilla Versus Destroyah

Where would a monster movie season be without the nuclear powered mother of all monster movies Godzilla. This is mid-period Godzilla – the last film in the series to be made in Japan before the American flop. It’s action from the get go as Godzilla rampages across Hong Kong. He’s at risk of going into nuclear meltdown so the military devise a super weapon that will take him down.

Thursday, 2 January – 9.30pm: The Horde

It’s often been said that the best way to recover from a big New Year’s is by sitting back on the couch and watching a French zombie film. La Horde is an end of the world battle between gangsters, cops and zombies.

Friday, 3 January – 10.05pm: An American Werewolf in London

Returning to the dawn of quality cinema – the eighties, SBS 2 brings you the classic that is An American Werewolf in London. No CGI, just old fashioned make-up, practical effects, sprouting hair and twisted, deformed body parts.

Saturday, 4 January – 9.30pm: Splice

Starring Oscar-nominee Sarah Polley and Oscar-winner Adrien Brodey, Splice follows scientist couple Polley and Brody as they attempt to create new life through genetic engineering.

Sunday, 5 January – 9.35pm: Monsters

Before Monster week comes to a close SBS 2 is inviting everyone on a sci-fi road trip with Monsters. Six years ago NASA discovered the possibility of alien life within the solar system. A probe was launched to collect samples, but crashed upon re-entry over Central America. Soon after, new life forms began to appear and half of Mexico was quarantined as an Infected Zone. Today, the American and Mexican military still struggle to contain “the creatures”. A U.S. journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through the infected zone to the safety of the U.S. border.
