“No proof” Nigella took drugs

UK millionaire Charles Saatchi has told a British court he has no proof that his celebrity ex-wife, TV chef Nigella Lawson, ever took drugs.

2013-12-01_0057UK  millionaire Charles Saatchi has told a British court he has no proof that his celebrity ex-wife, TV chef Nigella Lawson, ever took drugs.

“I have never, never seen any evidence of Nigella taking any drug whatsoever,” Saatchi told Isleworth Crown Court in west London.

“Are you asking me whether I think that Nigella truly was off her head? Not for a second. Over this whole period she was writing books very successfully and appearing on television.”

Last week two of Lawson’s former personal assistants alleged that she was a regular user of cocaine and other drugs as part of their defence in an ongoing fraud trial. Sisters Elisabetta and Francesca Grillo, who worked for Lawson for over a decade, are accused of using credit cards given to them by Saatchi and Lawson to spend more than £685,000 ($1.12-million U.S.) on themselves over four years.

Saatchi and Lawson ended their 10-year marriage in July, after newspapers published pictures of him with his hands around his ex-wife’s neck at a London restaurant a month earlier.

Saatchi has also explained his hands around her neck, saying he was neither throttling, nor shaking her, but holding her head to make her pay attention to the importance of what he was saying.

“I’m utterly heartbroken that I have lost Nigella and I wish this past year had never happened. I absolutely adore Nigella and I’m broken-hearted to have lost her.”

 

Lawson is due to be called as a witness next week. The trial is to resume on Wednesday.

  1. Pretty convinced Saatchi has Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and I really feel for Nigella for all these attacks against her. She’s been through an awful lot in her life and being successful (ie wealthy) seems to make some people think that her life must be so easy and cruisy.

    And I could be wrong, but I just can’t see her having a drug habit.

  2. The Grillos’ lawyer is trying to try the case in the tabloid media and dragging the messy marriage break-up into it. And it working. Helped by Saatchi giving quotes to the press about the drugs allegations and her being a bad mother (being careful to only refer to the Grillos claims) and Nigella’s lawyer using emails Saatchi sent her.

    The UK Telegraph had an op-ed (reprinted in the SMH) which attacked Nigella for her extravagant lifestyle and drug habit and painting Saatchi as the real victim.
