2014-01-22_2241One of my favourite new dramas of 2013, The Returned, is about to have its Free to Air premiere on SBS 2.

The French series Les Revenants, which screened on STUDIO last year, also aired in the UK as the first fully subtitled drama on Channel 4 for more than 20 years. It also won an International Emmy for Best Drama series.

An adaptation of the 2004 film They Came Back, it is eerie, moody and makes the most of some breathtaking landscapes. A second season has been approved as well as an English language version by Paul Abbott (Shameless)

This one made my Top 5 for 2013 so get on board if you’re looking for something provocative and arthouse.

Together with Orphan Black, it will make SBS 2 a great viewing alternative on Tuesday nights.

The Returned is a supernatural mystery thriller in which a small alpine town is faced with an inexplicable situation: the dead are returning – but this is a homecoming like no other.

In a French town dominated by a huge dam, several men, women and children find themselves in a state of confusion as they attempt to return to their homes. What they do not yet know is that they’ve been dead for years – but why have they come back?

Appearing in human form, the returned are completely unaware of their own fatalities, determined to reclaim their place in the world of the living. However, their arrival coincides with a series of chilling murders which bear a frightful resemblance to the gruesome work of a serial killer from the past.

The Returned stars five-time César Award nominee Anne Consigny, along with Clotilde Hesme (Trois mondes, Les Chansons d’amour), Céline Sallette (House of Tolerance), Guillaume Gouix (Jimmy Riviere), Frédéric Pierrot (Polisse), Pierre Perrier (American Translation, Sexual Chronicles of a French Family) and Yara Pilartz (17 Girls).

9:20pm Tuesday February 11 on SBS 2.

  1. Re Southpatt The American show is scheduled to start on Sunday the 9th March on ABC they are still playing with the title as Forever and Resurrection it has been made by Executive Producer Aaron Zelman (Damages, The Killing) And Brad Pitts Plan B company and stars Matt Craven and Omar Epps

  2. Resurrection is based on the novel The Returned by Jason Mott. It sounds like a slightly different take on a similar idea.

I enjoyed Les Revenants. It is well made and eerily beautiful with some nice touches. But it suffers from having the plot of 90 minute movie stretched to make several series of television. The first couple of episodes are interesting while you figure out who everybody is and what is happening but then nothing much happens until it builds towards the last episode. But the ending is just setting things up for S2. It also fails to create a sense of the town as a real community.

  3. This is good to know as I lost my subscription to STUDIO late last year therefore I was unable to see it when it was shown on that channel.

Hopefully I get to rectify this with SBS 2.
