Four Corners: Feb 3

Four Corners goes on the road with truck drivers who risk their lives, trying to meet impossible deadlines.

2014-01-31_0216Four Corners returns next week with as reporter Stephen Long goes on the road with truck drivers who risk their lives every day, trying to meet impossible deadlines.

What he finds is a deadly intersection of corporate greed, government inaction and an industry feeding on itself.

Long haul trucking is a tough way to make a living. It’s also an industry that takes far too many lives. The latest figures show that in just one year 242 people were killed in truck-related crashes and hundreds more were injured. Many of those accidents could have been avoided.

Over the past few years a series of horrific truck crashes have renewed questions about the state of the road transport industry. Are drivers being paid a fair wage? Are big companies forcing down freight rates unreasonably to improve their bottom line? And are trucking companies and owner-drivers responding to the pressure by cutting corners on maintenance to keep their businesses alive?

What Four Corners discovered talking to those inside the industry will chill anyone using our highways. Drivers confess to consistent and significant drug abuse. Another reveals how his company was switching drivers to avoid police and Transport Department checks.

Monday 3rd February at 8.30pm on ABC1.

  1. I look forward to watching this show.

I’ll admit I’ve come up with another way to promote it potentially. When I used to watch the 5.30pm News. I noticed that in the middle of it they’d do the “Local News” promotion in the middle of it. Which frankly hacked me off and, at the time, glad I didn’t watch the 7pm News but SBS News instead. That’s why I avoid it now.

What I wish they’d do instead is after the 5.30pm News have the Local Update/Promotion. Have the update end before 6pm so maybe other could catch it if they flick over. In between both have the ad for Four Corners. Also after the update have Australian Story. For other days use shows that might interest the News audience and nothing stupid that might make them flick over. Be strategic. No promises it’ll work unfortunately.
