Golden Globe Awards 2014: winners

Wins for Top of the Lake, Breaking Bad, Behind the Candelabra, House of Cards, Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

imageLIVE BLOG: Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have opened the 71st  Golden Globe Awards  with plenty of gags at Hollywood’s expense and it’s going down a treat.

“Good evening to all the women and gay men watching at home!” said Poehler.

Both spoke about the hierarchy of stars in the room.

“Matt Damon on any other night you would be a big deal, but tonight you’re basically a garbage person.”

Here are some of their other opening monologue gags:

“There are still great parts in Hollywood for Meryl Streeps over 60.”

“The original title of American Hustle was explosion at the wig factory.”

“Julia Louis-Dreyfuss has chosen to sit in the film section tonight. Hi Julia, you know us from TV.”

“George Clooney is nominated for Gravity which is about a guy who would rather float away into space and die than spend another second with a woman his age.”

“Matthew McCaughaney lost 45 pounds  for his role in Dallas Cowboy or what actresses call ‘being in a movie.'”

“Enjoy it while it lasts Netflix because it’s not going to last – in a couple of years when Snapchat is up here accepting best drama.”

Masters of Sex is the degree I got a college.”

The Blacklist is who is coming back to my room later tonight. Talking to you Somali pirates.”

“We’re going to get this show done in 3 hours or as Martin Scorsese calls it, Act One.”

Another appearance from hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, interrupting Kyra Sedgwick, Kevin Bacon and their daughter ‘Miss Golden Globes.’ Fey told the crowd her illegitimate ‘son,’ the result of an unnamed Hollywood affair, was Mr Golden Globes. He looked remarkably like Poehler in a tux and wig….

Melissa McCarthy and Jimmy Fallon had one of the funnier presenter moments when they joked about a bag of sand falling on her head and now she thought she was Matt Damon.

Seriously how do you split some of these names, especially the two stars of the Liberace bio?

“Matt Damon, the bravest talented actor I have ever worked with. And the only reason you’re not here is that I had more sequins,” said Douglas.

Woody Allen

Hmm. Diane Keaton accepts the award on behalf of no-show,Woody Allen. That’s a bit disappointing.

She acknowledges his talent, in particular his knack for writing for women. Honouring a 45 year friendship she sings a Girl Scout song.

“Make new friends,
but keep the old.
One is silver,
the other is gold.
A circle is round,
it has no end.
That’s how long,
I will be your friend.”

Ok think we need to see this one scheduled please. Should be coming to Nine.

“Now, like a superwoman’s vagina, let’s all give a big welcome to Leonardo DiCaprio,” joked Tina Fey. And then the broadcast quickly goes black. Bit late?

By the way, Cate Blanchett just won for Jasmine. She thanked her agent for not plying her with alcohol tonight, “in the same way that Judy Garland was probably supplied with barbiturates.” Oops.

Film winners included 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle.

Look at that, the Globes finish bang on time.

Full nominees are here.

NB: There is no Free to Air broadcast.

  1. Great picture David. Amy and Tina make such an awesome pair of hosts. I wish they did every award show on the planet, i could watch them all day!

I think Jacqueline Bissett was nominated for most promising newcomer, don’t think she ever won, but i am quibbling.

Great show the Globes this year; Blanchett’s faux pas, seasoned players like Voight and Bissett stuck for words, Amy Poehler finally winning something, Amy Adams and Leonardo finally winning something. Lots of surprises. 90 journos from around the world make the choices, and they influence the award season indelibly. Bizarre!

  2. Woody Allen never appears at any awards show. He has never picked up any of the awards he has won. For the Academy Awards, for example, he usually is playing Jazz in a New York club at the same time as the ceremony.

  3. Really happy that Cate Blanchett won, always great to see the Aussies doing good.

Disappointed James Spader & Kerry Washington didn’t win, they are both excellent in their shows.

Never heard of Brooklyn Nine Nine, hopefully we will get it here.

  4. The Golden Globes just don’t rate enough for an FTA network to be interested spending money on anymore. Especially in January.

Which is why Foxtel can get it.

  5. How in the heck did Andy Samberg and BNN win ?
I watch it each week and while it’s funny there’s no way it’s better than Big Bang or Modern Family and the weakest link in the whole show is Samberg’s overacting.

    1. Easily answered. Foxtel has a deal with the distributor because Live awards show is of value to them. Nine is only interested in the Oscars and Logies. They don’t have such a deal with the distributor. TV rights don’t work the way you’d like them to sorry.
