Clarkson has apologised after posting an image of himself next to an offensive sign on Twitter.

The Top Gear presenter was photographed next to a note bearing the words “gay c***” while asleep on an aeroplane, with the caption “Sadly, I fell asleep on the plane.”

He later deleted it, adding: tweeting: “I have deleted my last tweet and would like to apologise profusely to anyone who I upset while I was asleep.”

Clarkson has previously apologised for a range of remarks on Top Gear, including referring to car makes as being “a bit gay”, describing another car as “special needs,” saying public servants should be shot, and comments which were accused of being blasphemous.

  1. The great thing about JC is that he will happily offend anyone and doesn’t seem to discriminate. He also sends himself up as a parody of what folk expect from him. He is imo also compelling viewing and far better than many bland and boring presenters

  2. No one has the right not to be offended. If we are to maintain free speech then from time to time things may be said that some people might find unacceptable. Jeremy Clarkson has often uttered things that could be viewed as offensive towards a group that I consider myself a member of, but I don’t feel the need to demand an apology. He has his opinions and he is entitled to them. In fact, I find the irreverence of the Top Gear team hilariously funny and refreshing, whether I happen to agree with them or not.

  3. I acknowledge that it is offensive, but i think it’s just another case of a cotton wool society. Would he have got the attention for saying ‘straight —-‘? No, I don’t think so.

  4. Although I don’t condone the content, I think we are missing some context… Jeremy was asleep whilst James and Richard made up the sign and took the photo. My impression was that one of those two posted on Jeremy’s behalf and when Jeremy realised he deleted it and apologised.

  5. It’s the nature of a good comedian to skate on thin ice. Couple tha with the fact that people are talking life a little too seriously these days and… here we are.
