Julian Fellowes hints at Downton ending

"It's not going to go on forever," says writer Julian Fellowes.

2014-01-07_0037UK writer Julian Fellowes has hinted Season 5 of Downton Abbey may be the last.

“I don’t know yet if there is a season six, but it’s not going to go on forever. It won’t be Perry Mason,” he said.

The problem for the talented Fellowes is time. As well as his showbiz interests he is a Conservative member of the House of Lords.

He has also been commissioned to write a new American drama called The Gilded Age but told The Wall Street Journal that work on the programme would not start until Downton had come to an end.

“It’s for NBC Universal and it will happen when Downton finishes because I just couldn’t do both at once,” he said.

“I haven’t written it yet, but it’s about the old aristocracy, the Winthrops and the Stuyvesants and the new money of oil and gas and shipping in the 1870s. It will all be fiction – it won’t be real people – but when those families descended on New York, they took over.”

Meanwhile Season Four of Downton Abbey, which premiered in the UK in September, is expected to screen on Seven soon.

  1. If I could rely on the network to screen it in a consistent timeslot for the entire season then I might be open to waiting. But these days even shows that rate aren’t immune to erratic scheduling.

  2. The region 4 DVD is already out in New Zealand too, with lots of Kiwi sites now having Australian warehouses it is easy to get it legally.

News.com.au and SMH websites insisted on spoiling many of the plot points as they happened in the UK anyway.

  3. It’s not even about Downloading when it’s this Far out… The DVD has already been released in the UK. So a lot of people with Multi Region DVD players have already legitimatly purchased it.

I’ve already seen it, probably not as good as Season 3, Sad with no Matthew, but still great.

  4. I’m one of those old fashion types who prefer to wait and watch a show when its on tv and during a time year that suits Australia and not the UK or US. Yes, there was a problem last year with spoilers rampant on the dearly departed characters, but was able to remain spoiler free on seasons one, two and four so far.

  5. I havent watched season 4 yet. But I sort of know what happens by reading episode snipets. But Im one of those people who can wait until its on tv.

It will be sad when it ends because it is a really nice show. But I know it cant continue on forever. It would be nice to get a 6th season out of it.

Lat year rafters finished now maybe downton this year. My favourite shows are diminishing.

  6. I know it has an older demo, but really to hang on to a show for up to 4 months is ridiculous . I know people in their sixties who connect their computer or laptop via hdmi to their tele, have a list of sites and away to go and they have all seen s4 and the xmas special and the first 2 eps of sherlock. I know not everybody has good broadband but the day will come when it happens. The australian execs/ programmers must live in a parallel universe where the internet does not exist and for goodness sake, get rid of this stupid non ratings period, no such thing in this day and age. Rant Over.

  7. There will be the usual 1.5m people (5MC consolidated) for DA when Seven show it during ratings. It is the most watched drama in this country.

Seven could show it in October and November at the end of ratings if they thought it would benefit them. They aren’t dumb.

It probably can’t last past S5 because half the cast will have died suddenly by then.

Seven with have 1 1/2 seasons of Chicago Fire (after letting Fox 8 air it). It’s rating OK so they could show it at 9:30 or 10:30pm Wednesday, later in the year or next summer.

  8. Downton Abbey latest season just started airing in the US yesterday, which surprised me as I had assumed they got it the same time as the UK did. They did with last years season, as I found out about Matthew & Sybill dying on a US site before it aired here.

Not everyone downloads everything. Some people have slow internet speeds which do not allow it.

  9. I absolutely love Downton Abbey and would love to see it have a proper ending rather than follow the default path of every TV series these days of having to be renewed endlessly season after season until they fade away in a gradual death with no viewers and no real end.

  10. Is Channel 7 not aware that we live in an age where the networks can no longer afford to delay broadcast? Surely, there would not be many Downton fans who have not already watched Season 4?

  11. Yes, after the Tennis like everything else. How I get sick of hearing that. My guess is that Suits & Scandal will also disappear when all the ‘regular’ shows come back. Don’t know what they’ll do with Chicago Fire though.
