2014-01-01_2255Former NBC Today show hosts Bryant Gumbel and Jane Pauley made an appearance on the show this week.

The duo, who jointly hosted from 1982-1997, joined Matt Lauer for his 56th birthday and filled in for Natalie Morales and Savannah Guthrie during the holiday season.

Gumbel previously appeared on the show’s 60th anniversary in January 2012, while Pauley continues to appear on the show monthly for her “Life Reimagined Today” segment.

Both Pauley and Gumbel did admit, however, that it was not easy to snap back into the routine of things.

“The alarm went off and it took me a while to figure out what was going on,” Gumbel said. “And I doubled up on my alarms– two alarms.”

“I had three,” Pauley added. “For me it feels like, ya know, riding a bike, when you haven’t ridden a bike in about 30 years!”

Gumbel even gave Lauer a 1987 bottle of port from the show’s trip to Australia that year, emblazoned with his and Pauley’s names.

Al Roker, in Pasadena quipped, “I understand Gene Shalit’s standing by to review ‘Back to the Future.'”

There were also well-wishes from former Today show family -but none from Ann Curry.
