David Tennant in doubt for Broadchurch season 2

He'll appear in the US version, but David Tennant is no guarantee to return to the UK's Broadchurch.

1cgbrBroadchurch creator Chris Chibnall has hinted that David Tennant will not return for the second series.

Tennant played DI Alec Hardy in the hit whodunnit’s first run, and will appear a lead role in the US remake, Gracepoint, alongside Breaking Bad star Anna Gunn and Aussie Jacki Weaver.

“David’s very busy and Alec Hardy, at the end of series one, he was fired from the police, he had a heart problem – I don’t see how you come back,” Chibnall told Radio Times.

“[David is] a king on the stage, he’s off doing an American show right now… he’s got a lot on his plate.”

Last year, Tennant stated that he was unsure of his future with Broadchurch, saying: “I was dying of a heart attack so I don’t know how able Alec Hardy will be to do any more crime-fighting, we will have to see.”

Meanwhile, Tennant also appears in Spies of Warsaw on SBS ONE.

  1. I did wonder about the character returning when it was first mooted. Some suggested a prequel, but that would’ve just been the story that his character already talked about. So a sequel must be without him.

Or about him (maybe his character is the one that’s murdered).

  2. Agreed Maev.

Tennant’s character, although key and enigmatic, was not entirely pivotal to the show’s success. If Dr Who can do it then Broadchurch can too.

The show was more about the quirky Broadchurch community. Another strong, charismatic lead would work well alongside Olivia Colman in my view.

  3. Hmmm..that will be interesting….but I do not feel the show is dependant on his character…my personal feeling is…that Olivia Colman could carry the show quite well…her character was great in the first series…..
It is more about the place and what goes on and a collection of characters…
