ABC black comedy Laid is getting a UK version to star Doc Martin's Jessica Ransom.

2014-02-21_1542Another ABC series is set for an international adaptation -this time from the UK.

Black comedy Laid, created by Marieke Hardy and Kirsty Fisher, has received a pilot order from ITV2.

The series followed the misadventures of Roo (Allison Bell) whose former boyfriends succumbed to mysterious deaths and aired in two seasons on the ABC in 2011 and 2012.

The UK version will star Jessica Ransom (Doc Martin) and is being produced by STV Productions with Jonathan Harvey (Great Night Out, Gimme Gimme Gimme, Beautiful People) as writer. TV Wise notes veteran comedy director Ian Fitzgibbon is attached to helm the pilot. John Dagleish (Starlings, Truckers) also stars.

The pilot order for Laid comes after ITV announced that ITV2 would have a greater focus on scripted and entertainment formats with Reality set to move to newly announced free-to-air channel ITVBe.

The Australian production was produced by Porchlight Films.

The pilot order follows a raft of international adaptations for ABC scripted shows including Rake, The Slap, Review with Myles Barlow, Lowdown, The Straits and The Strange Calls.

A US version has been reported to be in development.

  1. I really like Season 1, i agree that season 2 went a bit too odd. I think the UK will do well with it, it’s very similar to that English black humour.

  2. The first series was OK and that is why they bought it.

The problem was that after it got renewed for S2 they only had one idea left, and they spent the whole series setting it up for S3, which of course it never made it to.

With a bit of polish and some direction in where it is going it should make a sitcom better than Hebburn, Pramface, My Family, Vicious or Freshmeat which the UK has been churning out recently.
