2014-02-20_0028Season 16 of perennial mystery series Midsomer Murders airs on ABC1 in early March.

There are 5 episodes of these that have aired in the UK so far.

It’s Christmas, and DS Charlie Nelson (Gwilym Lee) takes up his new post in Midsomer alongside DCI John Barnaby (Neil Dudgeon).

Furniture maker and serial philanderer Conor Bridgeman is stabbed to death with an antique sword during a ghost-hunting party at Morton Shallows manor house.

Owner Simon Fergus-Johnson (Mark Heap) and his family seem shocked that their new venture has gone tragically wrong, but historian Brendan Pearce (Les Dennis) points the finger at blacksmith’s daughter Rose Wilton – a ghost.

A ghost-like girl’s voice on a tape recording from the night of the murder is found – who is it? Can Barnaby and Nelson find a more earthly motive behind the murder and trap the killer?

8:20pm Saturday, 8 March ABC1.

Yes Jones is gone. They write him out a retrospective comment about a promotion and transfer to Brighton.

He is replaced by Hipster DS Charlie Nelson.

  2. Midsomer Murders hasn’t been on Sunday for a while. The ABC had success with it there. They moved their edgier dramas to Thursday night but they did poorly (Crownies, The Straits, The Slap) and the critics in the inner-west called it cop out not competing against the commercial networks on the main drama viewing night.

With DA and A Place To Call Home on Sundays they moved Midsomer Murders to Saturdays (along with Doc Martin, Last Tango In Halifax etc).

Their edgier dramas like TOOL, Peter Temple TVMs and now Rake an now Sunday going head to head with Seven and Nine for younger viewers. Seven’s melodramas skew older and Nine hadn’t had anything much on Sundays except 90 minute episodes of Sixty Minutes.

  3. Interesting Saturday rather than Sunday. I guess that’s good for viewers that might like Downton as well. Plus gives them something to watch on Saturday. I really like that the ABC does something on that night that pleases the audience it has.
