The Michael J. Fox Show future in doubt

NBC pulls Michael J. Fox sitcom from its schedule, which will make it hard for the show to resume production.

2014-02-06_1533US sitcom The Michael J. Fox Show is under a cloud after NBC pulled its remaining episodes from their schedule, a week after doing the same with the ultimately-axed comedy Sean Saves The World.

15 of the 22 completed episodes have aired in the US.

At present the show is not officially cancelled, but Deadline reports production wrapped in December, and there are no plans yet for the remaining 7 episodes.

Two weeks ago NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt said, “We like [MJ Fox]. We like Sean Hayes’ show a lot. Creatively, we think they’re good shows, and we’re really unhappy that we can’t find an audience for them in those time periods.

“It’s hard to launch comedy even in the best of circumstances, so I guess I would say I’m more weary. It just means we have to work harder. Comedy is hard,” he said.

The Michael J. Fox Show airs in Australia on the Universal channel.

  1. Shame. This program was good, and deserved to keep going.I’m extremely fussy when it comes to comedies so over the years have not watched that many at all and this one got the tick from me.Hated all those recent hit comedies, which are not funny at all. This show was not full of laughs but had enough to keep me interested. At least i still have one i can watch and that’s Last Man Standing

  2. I like both of these shows, really wish they got the audiance they both deserved. Hope NBC shows the 7 remaining MJF show eps.

Apparently NBC only got the show because it promised to air a full 22 ep season, other networks were in the running. I do wonder if they can now get the rights?

  3. Cancellation means not getting renewed for another season. The Michael J Fox shows was going to get cancelled after the first few episodes, unless it miraculously doubled it ratings.

It got picked up because NBC didn’t have any better replacements available and needed content to fill slots until the W!nt$r @l^mp!cs when they could pull it. It almost made it, getting pulled one week early and replaced by Hollywood Game Night hosted by Jane Lynch.

  4. @ Josh777 – It’s been cancelled and cable won’t bother with it, why would they when its broadcast ratings would struggle to place it in the top 50 cable shows most nights?

Greenblatt has to carry the can for picking this up for a full season without any premise or core writer, just Fox…and it showed, it was embarrassingly bad, especially for a show NBC were pinning their hopes on turning the network around.

  5. Just like almost every US comedy launched in the past few years, both these shows are terrible. I don’t think we’ll ever see comedies with such high viewership as Friends, Frasier, Seinfeld and Will and Grace. All these comedies with ex SNL casts are woeful and I can’t understand how they rate.

  6. When a network in the US does this it basically means virtually cancelled. Not surprised to be honest. Its not that funny. Its ok but a lot of the new comedies are pretty average this year.
