Announcing the TV Tonight Genre Survey…
Everyday we see the shows that are rating in OzTAM age demos, but which genres are being overlooked, which ones are being done to death and which ones would get you to change channels if a network invested more in them?
These are the kinds of questions asked in TV Tonight‘s very first Genre Survey.
It gauges your interest in the following genres:
Drama, Comedy, Light Entertainment, Reality, Lifestyle, Observational, Documentary, Current Affairs, News, Sports, Kids and Breakfast / Morning TV.
Significantly, the survey never asks you to name your favourite shows or channels -in order to zero in on the kind of television that appeals to you. Do females 25-54 prefer Reality? Do males 16-39 want more Comedy? And do the results differ from city to city?
What’s the best way to promote content to you? TV ads? Radio? Online?
Are you the person usually in charge of the remote?
There are a range of questions in the survey that takes between 5 – 10 minutes to complete. Please note as the focus is on Genres, it does not ask questions usually reserved for the annual Audience Inventory, which is focussed on how you watch.
One important point: the survey will ask you to choose a demographic you fit into. As some of these cross-over (ie. 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54) you should choose the one you most identify with.
To complete the survey you will also need a valid email. Survey closes on March 15.

Should have a ‘any comments’ section at the end.
I could then say that Aus TV does news and Current Affairs poorly, except for ABC and SBS who do it well.
Done. 🙂
Does viewer’s preference matter? What works in primetime is a gameshow, news, current affairs or a soap to build an audience for a contest show which fill the PG slots and provide a lead-in to an M rated drama.
While there are a handful of popular dramas that are profitable there are a hundred other current series that aren’t and a thousand series available in repeats that can fill non-primetime slots. People watch or more likely record their favourites out of them.
I’m going to enjoy Downton Abbey, Supernatural, Orphan Black, Burn Notice, The Good Wife and Psych this week.
People said a cooking show would never work in primetime. Risk is important in television. Every exec will tell you that, even if they are the last to enforce it. Nobody forcing you to fill out the survey, thanks.
Thanks David 🙂
I believe it deserves its own though, but I get your reasoning.
@AJ Mores the pity 😛
Perhaps the survey could have had, in conjunction with “Which age Demo are you”, a question of how old you actually are. I’d be interested to know what age people are thinking they’re what Demo.
At 28 I fit into All of them……. But i feel like the shows i like are probably the 16-29 ones.
I did the survey and think its a great idea to have the public voice their opinions on genre in Australia, or lack there of! But perhaps next time you could include broader genres- Sci fi, fantasy, horror, action. At the very least, include them in a section as to which ones the audience thinks we should be making here
mixture of programs
At long last a survey that really means something.
Great idea.
@unclepete
Aussies don’t watch much Sci-fi.
Very interested in seeing the results of this survey.
Might want to change to ‘main or joint’ for the grocery buyers.
Having one person buying groceries for a household is a bit 1950s
Two things…
What about Sci-Fi? 🙁
Also, you need a button for Current Affairs that states it does worse than very poorly!
Sci Fi is a sub genre of Drama (usually).
