AFP drops investigation into Corby “deal”

Australian Federal Police drop an investigation into whether Seven had a deal with Schapelle Corby.

AFP-RAID-The Australian Federal Police have dropped an investigation into whether Channel Seven had a deal with Schapelle Corby.

Seven maintained it had no deal with Corby, branding the raids as “excessive and unnecessary” -it has since launched legal action against the AFP.

“Seven was always frank and co-operative with the AFP as to our position in the negotiations for an interview with Schapelle Corby and believes that the use and execution of search warrants was excessive and unnecessary,” a spokesman told News Corp.

“As the matter remains before the court, we do not intend to make further comment at this stage. The Federal Court proceedings are not affected.”

But the AFP said its decision to drop the investigation “does not mean that the original concerns that initiated the investigation were not well founded”.

Seven has since conceded it paid villa and security costs for Corby.

Authorities in Bali will assess whether Corby’s parole should end following an interview by Mercedes Corby with Sunday Night.

Updated: A Seven statement said:

The Seven Network welcomes the decision made by the AFP that its investigation is no longer warranted and it will be returning all material seized under search warrants executed on Seven’s premises on 18 February.

Seven noted that it was awaiting judgment in the Federal Court proceedings heard last week which seek to have the warrants set aside.

“Seven was always frank and co-operative with the AFP as to our position in the negotiations for an interview with Schapelle Corby and believes that the use and execution of search warrants was excessive and unnecessary,” a Seven spokesman said. “As the matter remains before the Court, we do not intend to make further comment at this stage. 1. It was clear Seven were paying for the room. And stated that before the warrant as served.

The AFP is hoping to avoid a wrap over the knuckles from the judge. Seven are still hoping they will get one.

  2. I have to say I think this is good. I’d really prefer our Federal Police focus on catching murderers and paedophiles rather than a tv deal…
