Axed: Once Upon a Time in Wonderland

The spin-off of Once Upon a Time, starring Aussie Sophie Lowe, reaches the bottom of the rabbit hole.

2014-03-30_0059Spin-off series Once Upon A Time In Wonderland is about to have its final episode air in the US.

The series, which stars Aussie Sophie Lowe, was an off-shoot of Once Upon a Time and based around Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Deadline reports originally envisioned as a bridge between the fall and spring runs of Once Upon A Time, Wonderland put additional pressure on the creators to mount two complex, special effects-heavy productions simultaneously with little lead time. ABC execs have since admitted that that scheduling strategy was probably a mistake.

Wonderland was originally eyed for as many as 17 episodes but, following a slow start, it ended up producing 13 episodes, all of which will have aired.

It is yet to screen in Australia.

  1. It was not slated for one season if it had rated well it would have been renewed, that is the rubbish network PR puts out.

It was just a turkey with dreadful scripts done on the cheap with terrible CGI. It was marked for cancellation from Week 3 and remained on because they couldn’t afford to take it off. Seven knew this which is why they never showed it.

  2. I found the show to be actually pretty good. I love the twists and turns the show has had so far and I’m so sad to see it go after the next ep. At least the original is still on!

  3. It was always slated for one season and then they may venture into other worlds. However the show had no chance when ABC slotted it in its death slot of 8pm Thursday. They should have stuck to the original plan and aired it during the OUAT hiatus and maybe it would have done better.

  4. Actually the 17 episode run was decided to be pared back to 13 episodes before the show started and a 2nd season was only ever a maybe. So not really axed, it is more that ABC has not opted to have a 2nd season, which if it was to happen was going to be a complete new story to this one.

As per this article back on August 04th last year, OUATIW started in October in the US, so this article is 2 months before the show first aired.

“It’s honoring what came before and leaping off and trying to do our own spin, executive producer Adam Horowitz said at the Television Critics Association fall TV previews on Sunday. The producers note that the 13-episode first season is a contained and complete story that, should it prove successful, could continue with a new tale in a potential second season.”
