Axed: Silk to end with third season

BBC legal drama Silk, starring Maxine Peake, will end with its third season.

2014-03-25_0045BBC legal drama Silk, starring Maxine Peake, will end with its third season.

Creator, Peter Moffat, confirmed he has decided that the season currently airing in the UK will be the last, ahead of the final episode due next Monday.

“It has been a complete joy to work with a group of actors as good as this and with a lead actress who I consider to be the best there is,” he said. “The main characters in Silk all have personal and professional stories which are coming to a natural conclusion at the end of this current series – it would be dishonest as a writer and unfair to the integrity of the show and everyone involved in it, to prolong the series beyond what I hope is a powerful and compelling denouement.”

Kate Harwood, Head of BBC Drama Production, England, added: “We are immensely proud to have produced three series of Peter Moffat’s highly appreciated legal drama Silk. Maxine Peake’s iconic portrayal of heroic, complex, truth-seeking barrister Martha Costello has won her huge admiration and a loyal following and Martha will be bowing out with one of the biggest and most personal cases of her life in which the personal and professional collide.”

  1. I respect Peter Moffat’s reason for terminating Silk. It is a beautifully written series with a depth and power that few others achieve. The ABC will sorely miss the best of these BBC dramas. Be prepared viewers for a lot more cheap and cheerful chat shows on the ABC to replace them.

  2. Yes S2 has definitely aired on ABC, they repeated S1 and followed into S2. It is one of my favourite tv series and the charcater Martha Costello is one of the very best….it has been a while though. S2 started on Friday 22nd March 2013

  3. @DK – I thought I had seen S2 around the middle of last year but you have an article from 10 July 2013 saying that it’s still to come and another from 27 December saying that it was “absent in 2013” so now I’m not sure. The thing is, from reading the synopses for S2, I’m sure that I’ve seen those eps, and I didn’t holiday in the UK or buy the DVDs or “grey-import” them.

  4. The ABC has shown the first two series of Silk and announced the third. They would have to show it after Rake and Janet King, but before their deal with the BBC end at the end of June.

The first series with plots mostly about junior barristers and the relationships between the characters wasn’t great. They reworked the 2nd series into a more conventional court room drama.
