2014-03-30_0139TEN is readying two new US shows Crisis and The Millers, expected to launch in coming weeks.

Despite the irony of the Crisis title, can these shows help turn the tide for TEN?

Crisis centres on an idealistic Secret Service agent who finds himself at the center of an international crisis on his first day on the job. In his search for the truth, he will have to cross moral and legal lines as he navigates the highest levels of power and corruption.

The series features Dermot Mulroney, Gillian Anderson, Lance Gross and Aussie Rachael Taylor. Two eps have aired in the US although at 6.5m viewers was said to be “soft.”

Comedy series The Millers stars Will Arnett as Nathan Miller, a recently divorced local roving news reporter looking forward to living the singles’ life until his parents’ marital problems unexpectedly derail his plans.

After he finally breaks the news of his divorce to his parents Carol (Margo Martindale) and Tom (Beau Bridges), his father is inspired to follow suit and stuns the family when he leaves his wife of 43 years. Tom moves in with Nathan’s sister Debbie while mother Carol moves in with Nathan, each driving their children crazy.

This one is produced by Greg Garcia and directed by James Burrows.

It has fared well with ratings of 9 – 13 million US viewers.

TEN is also expected to have MasterChef, Offspring and 24 after the Easter break.

  1. The Millers was CBS’s worst sitcom and only got ratings and renewal because it was paired with TBBT.

    Crisis is doing dreadfully and will be cancelled.

    Ten didn’t get anything decent from CBS this year. If viewers aren’t prepared to watch good shows like the Goodwife why would they watch stuff this bad?

  3. @MuchoTB – I watched the promo for The Millers and I thought Martindale and Bridges were hilarious. It’s a long way from being the worst sitcom in years.

  4. Crisis is actually quite good – it is similar to 24 and axed series The Event – I enjoyed the first two episodes and am looking forward to the third

    The Millers is awful – worst sitcom to air in years. Watch the trailer on youtube and you will see how bad it is!

  6. @ dave. The amazing thing was the Ten / Shanks launch of mid 1989 was was considered a absolute disaster of it time. Nine and seven rated similar to what they do today. But flip the figures with nine being the dominant network. But the disaster ratings figure for ten was in the low 20’s. I figure they would be wrapped to reach in 2014!!!!

  7. Neither of these shows will help TEN unfortunately. Neither will MasterChef. I’m a loyal TEN fan but I’ve only seen the odd ad for The Millers on air and MasterChef’s glory days are behind it unfortunately.

  8. Ten has a very good friend in David and his successful website. There is a lot of goodwill for Ten both with regulars and our host. But it seems everything they (Ten) touch is sour. The last time I recall such doldrums was the late 1980’s and the Bob Shanks era. Something needs to change, and big, and soon!

  9. the millers was such a disappointment…the older characters is where this show was lost on me…very ordinary TV show, like the Mom show on 9 ..it will fail miserably

  11. @daveinprogress – I was thinking the same thing about Bridges and Martindale, and I’ve enjoyed Arnett in the 2 or 3 things I’ve seen him in (altho’ he’ll always be G.O.B. to me – did somebody say “magic”?).

    Will give this a look depending on when it’s on. Not sure about Crisis.

  12. Crisis is bombing, The Millers is an ok comedy so i doubt it but at least they are trying. Kind of funny launching a show about the state of their network in “crisis”.

David, I recall an article earlier this year about Ch10 2014 programming, and Beverley McGarvey indicated that they were (quite rightly) planning on delaying Masterchef till later in the year – to give it some breathing space? They should bring forward a bona fide hit like the Bachelor Au and promote Masterchef during it. If they plan on an April launch it will sadly be DOA.

  17. The Millers might have had a chance if they started the promos sooner, have not seen one yet and I watch Ten quite a lot. I think they will have a better chance with Offspring and Masterchef.

  18. The Millers is so bad that if couldn’t even finish the first episode. James Burrows does make some hits but his latest offerings have been failure in my eyes.

  19. No. The Miller’s receives average ratings in the US and Crisis will be very lucky to see a second season. Ten really are reaching the bottom of the barrel. Add this to the fact that ratings at Ten are still in free fall, there are far fewer people that will see the ads for any new show. They could certainly learn a thing or two from 7 on how to launch a new show.

  21. For America, the credentials are very impressive for The Millers. James Burrows is directing royalty on the small screen, Bridges and Martindale are great actors and Wil Arnett is comedy gold. But will it work here? On Ten?

    In a nutshell, no. Not with 10 days of promos playing to a primetime aud of 500k.

    Ten doesn’t seem to realize this. When no one is watching. No one sees your promos. And they launch shows with 10 days notice.

    This network never learns.
