  1. Comments regarding the ‘old concerts’ are spot on. One of the best was in 1995 from the Congress Centre. produced and directed by Graham Rowlands. The ‘name’ performers from memory (I have it somewhere on a thing called a VHS Tape) included John Farnham singing ‘Touch of Paradise’ with full band plus Venetta & Lisa,, Meryl Bainbridge whose song ‘Mouth’ took off after this performance, The Umbilical Brothers brought the house down, The Wiggles in their early days who killled it with ‘Hot Potato’, Joey Perrone sang ‘Go West’ backed by the Victorian Male Welsh Choir (both bizarre and brilliant!) Rachel Beck did the disco version of ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’, Sylvie Paladino did Whitney’s ‘One Moment In Time’ and there were many others including Gina Jeffreys. Worthy of national prime time.

  2. @SecretSquirrel – bang on the money mate. It’s a shame that publicity departments are full of young twenty somethings that weren’t even born 21 years ago when there were concerts held at the World Congress Centre. So to claim it is a first is wrong. They were ticketed events and ended with the cheque presentations from the Uncle Bob’s club and the Women’s Auxiliary and the speech from Christine Unsworth (RCH) and Brian Mallon (Seven MD). Grand total announced at midnight and a good night had by all.

No doubt that the concert should be on 7Two nationally. The Perth telethon is huge but is not a patch on the Good Friday Appeal – their production values don’t even come close. It is also non-ratings period and wouldn’t cost 7 a cent to broadcast it nationally – they save money by not showing regular programming.

  3. Secret Squirrel: “TV execs must have their own special dictionary with different meanings for words such as “first”, “exclusive”, “celebrity”, “most-loved”, “season final”, “8:30″, etc.”

Best comment I’ve seen all day 🙂

  4. I’ve always wanted to watch this telethon but I can’t because I am outside Victoria. Surely in the era of digital TV Seven can screen it on 7Two nationally. It would also boost donations to this worthy cause. The ABC puts state election counts onto ABC News24 so why do we have to put up with another Easter of tired old repeats on 7Two?

  5. Yes i remember these concerts back in the day,and to be honest still should be doing them. This maybe the first step in going back to the original concept. This one they are doing will be ok.But a proper concert performance would be heaps better.I have not watched the evening show since they took off the concert version

  6. Seven are obviously using “first-ever” in the same manner as when they hyped Home & Away’s visit to the UK. TV execs must have their own special dictionary with different meanings for words such as “first”, “exclusive”, “celebrity”, “most-loved”, “season final”, “8:30”, etc.

  7. Pretty sure the former concerts were ticketed events as the proceeds went to the appeal. They were initially at the World Congress Centre but I do recall later ones being at the Arts Centre

  8. When I read this in yesterdays paper I thought it was wrong. As others have said about 8-10 years ago Lisa McCune was co-hosting a concert that was at the old convention centre.Only reason I remember is Jimmy Barnes wrote a song called Higher as a fundraiser for the RCH and he performed it live for the first time with Gary Pinto from CDB.

  9. It would be really good if Seven would televise this on 7two for the other states. It’s always a great appeal along with the Perth telethon and would love it for them to show it to all. No surprises who is performing though. A lot of the usual seven stable of singers.

  10. That’s not quite correct. Good Friday Appeal has had stand-alone concerts before. There were several held at the convention centre, now the World Trade Centre. I know because I went along to them. Lisa McCune did one of her first public appearances as a singer/dancer during her Maggie Doyle days and I recall seeing a very young Vanessa Amorosi impress the audience at the convention centre. It was a small audience, but it nevertheless was a standalone concert event. Also recall Ian Duncan was programmer at the time.
