Two Australians are being deported from Indonesia for covering the Schapelle Corby case while on tourist visas.
Fairfax reports TEN Network correspondent Daniel Sutton and freelance photographer Nathan Richter will be sent back to Australia late on Friday after being picked up near the Corby family compound.
Sutton (pictured, in blue) said he had only been in Bali for a matter of hours doing a report from the street near the compound in Kuta when he was approached by immigration officials and asked to produce his passport.
“I voluntarily went to answer some questions on Wednesday and again on Thursday,” Sutton said.
“I was never arrested and haven’t been charged with anything. It was a misunderstanding with my visa; they’ve told me I’m on the wrong visa and this afternoon I’ll be deported.
“I’m disappointed that I can’t keep doing my job and let people know what’s happening here in the case I was sent to report on, but I’ve been treated well by immigration authorities. I’m just disappointed to be going home.”
Richter was picked up at the same location but is also understood to have not been arrested.
Fairfax suggests some media organisations allow their staff to obtain tourist visas on arrival at the airport due to lengthy procedures in obtaining journalist visas.

They failed to a press visa and tried to sneak in on tourist visas. Serves them right.
@mistaken – or you could save your money and increase your IQ by 10 point by not watching SN.
Any chance they could deport Mike Willesse too so we don’t have to endure any more Corby stories on Sunday Night? I’m willing to pay.
This is what happens when you try to do things on the cheap.
…….. Yet if someone from another country tried that in Australia………Oh the out cry!
If you knew you needed a work visa, then apply for one. “It would take to long” is not a defence.
Good point.
Those wondering why he didn’t get a proper visa, Indonesia’s system is notoriously slow and often takes weeks get approval. That said, he’s so incredibly lucky no jail time was involved. He dodged a bullet there.
So he applied for a tourist visa rather than a work visa knowing he would be working? Hasn’t he ever watched Border Security?
Is there any truth in the rumour that Ten have requested that Oztam include the immigration officials that approached Sutton in their ratings figures?
They were watching a Ten reporter at work, which is more than most of us have been doing recently…
Get the paperwork done correctly beforehand then, guys!
The less people reporting on the Corby family the better. I am so sick of hearing about them.
